Customer Reviews

Box marked 67mm that contained a 72mm filter! Got the filter today and couldn't figure out why the 67mm UV filter would fit on my UWA lens. I was way too big. I checked the side of the box, which had a label on it that certainly indicated 67mm. Thinking I ordered the wrong size, I checked my lens, which also indicated 67mm. I took a close look at the side of the very slim lens and saw that it was marked 72mm! So the supplier is throwing the wrong size filters marked into boxes with different size lenses. I hope my product doesn't go back on the shelf for somebody else to go through the same experience. Suggest choosing another product and pass up this brand. 2For the price, the quality is pretty good! Great price for a multicoated, quality UV lens protector! Very thin, low profile mount, no problems with installing it. You won t even notice it on your lens but the gold ring gives it away. When shooting at night into a light source, the filter causes flare, so if you decide to shoot at night, it s probably better to remove the filter (see photos). I mainly purchased the WAKA filter to protect the glass on my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4L, better to scratch the filter than the glass! 5Surprisingly, very high quality slim filters. Surprisingly, very high quality slim filters. I am not a big fan of using filters in general, but necessity of protecting your expensive front glass, even if only for resale purposes, dictates that I use these 'UV' filters on my more expensive lenses. Obviously, there is no 'Ultra-Violet' protection or 'Anti Haze' protection or whatever filter manufacturers call these filters. So for me the important factors are multi-coating (to combat flare), slim design (to avoid vignetting) and the highest level of transparency (to avoid light loss). Waka was able to deliver on all three fronts. I shot few pictures in the extremely challenging conditions to detect flare, but multi coating did work and no additional flare, compared to naked lens was detected. Filter itself is very slim and glass is transparent (your eyes are telling you that you are holding an empty metal ring when you are looking through filter at blue sky). I also liked very narrow dull gold ring on the outside - it is not tacky at all and actually brings a small degree of sophistication to your lens. Finally, I had no difficulty putting the filter on lens, no cross threading like with typical cheap filters. The lens cap stays confidently on the filter too.For the price I can definitely recommend this filter, but only as a glass protector. Don't think for a second that this $10 filter will make pictures shot with $500 lens magically better. It won't. 5A four-star multi-coated thin UV filter at a six-star bargain price. I'm a former semi-pro photographer from the days of film (35mm and 120/220). I have the 67mm version of this filter. The coatings on this aren't quite up to my old Nikons and B+Ws. With those UV filters, the glass vanishes completely when you look at it; it just looks like you're holding an empty ring. This one, there's definitely a transparent something filling the ring. That said, I've not noticed any degradation of image quality on digital. I also suspect that digital sensors are much less susceptible to UV than film was, so the main reason I use a filter such as this one now is protection. Most uncoated filters and even many multi-coated filters in this price range - and even well above it - are subject to flare and ghosting and general badness; this one hasn't shown any so far.The filter ring is metal, with a dressy gold pinstripe and threads fore and aft. The threads on mine feel a tiny bit off. When screwing it onto my Nikon 16-85 I hit a slightly tight spot part-way on which, if I keep turning the filter, eases up so the filter seats all the way down. It's a very minor thing, but it never happened with the brass rings used by Nikon and B+W.The filter has a thin mount with threads on both sides. It doesn't show on my 16-85 (DX format). Furthermore, I have - for speed - spun a standard polarizer on top of it and even that doesn't show at 16mm (DX, 24mm full-frame), despite not seating all the way down on the front threads. That frees me to concentrate on composing to hide any uneven polarization across the field. When stacked, this filter does tend to bind more to the other filter than to the lens threads, something to be aware of. (Yes, I tried soft-mounting the pol on top of it with just a 1/2 turn or so, but then it shows in the corners.)CONCLUSION: A slightly imperfect object, but because I think of it more as a bumper than as an actual photographic tool, the near-Hamilton price point makes it perfect. 5Great Filter at a Great Price This is a great, affordable filter. Buying a filter should be a no-brainer: either risk scratching your expensive lens, or spend a few dollars on an easily replaceable filter. This filter is clear, the threads fit perfectly, and the sizing was exactly as specified. I can't really see a difference between images taken without the filter over the lens, and images taken with the filter, but that may be just because I don't have an eye for that level of detail in the photographs. If the blacks really are darker and the haze is actually cut down, it seems to be on a level that is almost unrecognizable. That said, for lens protection, this is perfect. 5Canonfodder FTW Let's face it, we get UV filters to break instead of the expensive optics. Anything beyond that is a delightful bonus. This isn't on my Canon but my Nikon P900, and I took it for a test session for this evening's sunset. It arrived earlier this afternoon. Unlike previous UV filters I have had and broken, this WAKA (waka-waka) filter went on with very few rotations. Quick! Nice. As it went on, the gold band flashed at me. I'm accustomed to black-on-black lenses and filters so it caught my eye - not in a bad way.No aberrations stood out during the photo session. It was serving its primary function in a no-fuss manner. Once on, I was able to forget about it and just do photography.I hope that if it one day suffers the indignant end of its predecessor, it too absorbs the impact and protects the camera's expensive optics with its sacrifice. 5MC makes this thing amazing. Worth every penny The fact that this thing is multicoated makes it a million times better than any non-multicoated variant. I've bought a different brand 77mm UV filter (not mentioning any names, but it starts with an A and ends with "ltura") before, non-MC, and it ghosts extremely terribly with any specular highlights, especially in low light conditions. Always, always get multicoated.Attached is a photo that I took with a Canon 24mm f/2.8 with this filter on, and it works perfectly. Take a look. I haven't had any issues with it, it works, I can't tell that it's there, what more can you ask for? 5Deflects Light In the Day, Ghosts at Night I bought this for my SonyA7II paired up with the 50mm f/1.8 with the threading of 49mm. It fits perfectly and works well for especially during the day time. It has blocked out some light that I didn't want and it kind of works like a lens hood from blocking out light. I also noticed during the night time but, I don't know if anyone really uses a UV filter at night for night photography, it was the fact that it reflects light on the filter so it would look like it would mirror light trails or surrounding lights. This feels like it's ghosting my images or I would think I'm shaking the camera but, it was the filter.Pros:- Reflects some light- Better contrast in your shots!- Does what it is described to do- Very good price pointCons:- If shooting at night with it on, please remove it to prevent ghosting or reflections on your end result shots.- The threading could be tricky and removing the UV filter can be hard to remove so, sometimes it could get stuck. 4Protects lens but creates green spots Works well in the daytime. It does tend to throw flares but it is controllable on direct light. For me light and night photos it gives green flares at random points regardless of which way you spin it. I'm going to replace it will a better brand. I find myself editing out light flares which is more annoying than shooting without it.In the photo attached you'll see the flare in the glass which is coming from the light post. 3Dust magnet I'm disappointed in this UV Filter, primarily because it seems to attract dust and is very difficult to clean. Somehow, dust clings to the glass despite numerous applications of cleaning solution and wiping with microfiber cloth. I got so frustrated with it that I removed it from my lens in the middle of an event I was shooting. I purchased this to protect my glass, but it's more trouble than protection. When the filter is clean, it performs adequately and without distortion. The problem is that it stays clean for only a few minutes when shooting outdoors. 2
