and it seems not to hold a good edge for longAnother product to cut wood with a butter knife edge, and this one is tough to sharpen!! Local sharpening guy would not do it, so I ended up with a grinding wheel on a Dremel to get an edge on it, and it seems not to hold a good edge for long!! Cheap steel maybe???2Quality tool if you tune it upImagine an 18th century Williamsburg cabinet-maker, carpenter or cooper who had this tool dropped off at their shop. They would be thrilled as that is how the village blacksmith would have made it at his local forge and foundry. It was then left up to the craftsman to fine tune the tool for work. Thus, this is a quality tool that requires a lot of milling with a few files, and then some serious sharpening with some diamond-embedded sharpening stones and emery paper. The work can be sped up with a grinder and power sander. For $30 I now have a nicely tuned tool that would cost me $150 from an European tool company. If you want to use this tool right out of the box, this is not the tool for you.5I used this after purchasing it and it worked great. However the shave tool came with a lot ...I used this after purchasing it and it worked great. However the shave tool came with a lot of small chips in the blade. It was sharp but these chips were not just felt by the bare hand but were big enough to see without looking hard. Prior to using this shave tool I decided to run a file over the blade to smooth out the chips and put a finished edge on it. This tool was easy to sharpen and worked really nice however I only gave it 4 stars because strait out of the box you shouldn't have to break out the file to straighten out an edge. The tool does come with a rudimentary rubber protector for edge retention during shipping so this must be how the finished product comes from the manufacturer.4Poor quality don't waste your money I bought this and it's full to start, sharpen it and it don't hold an edge. Poor quality don't waste your money. You get what you pay for. I love the shape and really could of been useful with our log furniture business 1Can't Sharpen ItI have a LOT of tools to sharpen and a lot of sharpening devices. I have spent hours trying to get a sharp edge on this tool, but haven't been able to do so. I've bought draw knives in the past that were so sharp I cut myself badly on them before even using them on wood just handling them, but this one eludes me. It's possible I just don't have the technique down as this is a curved blade, but I think the back edge of this tool should have been machined so the cutting edge could be sharpened.2Perfect Tool for Stripping PolesWhile this is not of a quality useful as a scorp for carving out seats on your Windsor chair project - with a little sharpening it does a decent job of stripping or peeling (pealing sic) bark from poles. If you camp with scouts on events like jamborees where you will need poles for pioneering projects - you also need to strip the bark lest you inadvertently transport insect pests or their eggs from one locale to the next. This tool is just the ticket.4Don't bother unless you enjoy wasting your time...Fast shipping, box in perfect condition, well packaged, even had a plastic safety cover for the blade, which was entirely unnecessary. First, the front side of the blade was knicked up all along the edge. Second, the painted surface extends right up to very edge of the machined surface, so every time you you go to sharpen this thing (and it will be often), your stones get gunked up with this stuff that you have to clean out of your stones several times. Third, the back side of the blade has no bevel at all, and is painted all the way up to the knicked edge already mentioned, so plan on machining both sides of the blade before this thing is even remotely serviceable to cut through ANY material. And last, this is obviously not tool steel, because this thing will not hold an edge for more than a few minutes of use. I've spent more time sharpening this tool than using this tool. You would have better luck starting with an old rust lawn mower blade; your investment in time to make it work for the job would probably be about the same.1Horrible productThis was the worst waste of money!!!!!! The blade is not hardened steel so the first time you use it the blade chips and will not hold an edge. Attempting to sharpen with a file was a waste of time1It s a Good KnifeThe handles are well shaped, and the blade was properly sharp upon delivery. As with all of my edged tools, I cleaned and sharpened it each day after use. I used the draw knife to remove the bark from several oak limbs. Some of the sharpness issues noted in other reviews may be due to technique, both with the tool and with the stone. Using a skewed slicing motion with each draw more easily removes material. After cleaning with 409 each day, I used a flat stone, oil, and circular motion on the bevel side with great sharpening results.5Heavy and Rugged!Quality is great and has a nice heavy feel. It will not work for what I bought it for because I wasn't thinking that 5" was the length of the blade. Of course now I realize that it couldn't mean anything other than that but sometimes I buy tools without really thinking about the application because I can use so many tools. It will work great this next spring while we are camping. I will certainly look into a larger version of the same tool in order to complete my current project.4unsharpend draw knifeThis is the first drawknife I've bought. Works good for 20 bucks, MADE IN CHINA. Unsure if the curved blade is better then a stright blade for this however since it came unsharpend. That was a set back from going out and using it right away. The handles are nice however my hand would tend to slip up towrds the blade when using which isn't the best but, In the end it's a good starter tool for the price.4
