Awesome Streamlight SL-20L *********Review update 11/13/14********I originally purchased this item 07/21/12. The SL-20L was shipped with a new type of battery, NiMH (Nickle Metal Hydride). All of the stream light products I have used in the past 25+ years have been NiCd (Nickle Cadmium). So I took a chance on using the "Environmentally Friendly" NiMh battery. Since this new light also states it is a smart charging and only charges the battery as needed, I was very excited to buy it. Here we are 2 years later and I've purchased 2 new batteries since. After the first year of use, the NiMH would not hold full charge and the light auto-dimmed. If I wanted a dim flashlight I would have bought one, but I need bright. I purchased a factory Streamlight NiMH battery to replace it. A year latter, I've had to replace that battery. I was beginning to think the flashlight itself was not charging correctly and all StreamLights are lifetime warranted. After a little research, I've found the NiMH are NOT what they are said to be. I have purchased a NiCd (Nickle Cadmium) as a replacement.I give stream light 5 stars hands down on all of their lights (I have many others, SL20X, Stinger, Scorpion, Pro-Tac and 3 weapon mounted). I am a die-hard Streamlight fan. You can not beat their life time product warranty. The SL-20L is an awesome light, I still strongly agree it is a great product. But the NiMH battery is junk and tarnishes a great product's image. It is not suited for Public Saftey Use!!!! DO NOT BUY NiMH Batteies in any Streamlight product. You will be buying them more often that the old NiCd ones. Rechargeable batteries have a limited life to them, this is a given factor. Depending on your use, the NiMH will not meet the demands of Public Safety work.*********Original Post********I have owned and used Streamlight products for over 25 years in public safety. I have an SL-20X still in-service for the same time frame. I've replaced the switch, battery and bulb, but overall it has been a major work horse that never failed me.Now enters a new generation of lights, LED C4. I have slowly changed to the smaller units on my duty belt and have been very pleased with their durability and brightness. When LED first hit the market, they weren't nearly as bright as the original incandescent lights. But the improvements with recent LED C4 have changed lighting completely for the better. From LED light bars on emergency vehicles to the actual handheld lights used in the field. So this brings me to making the change to the SL-20L. I use to carry two SL-20X, for the simple reason of the battery life. Most nights I would be fine with the single light, but some nights, scenes would require me to bring out the second light. I had the pleasure of seeing this new SL-20L light from a younger officer who had purchased it. I remember when Streamlight tried to make the combo light that had the 3 little LED with a regular incandescent bulb. I wasn't in the least bit impressed with that version. But seeing and using this new SL-20L, I was impressed. I purchased my own SL-20L and have been using the light for several weeks now. I charge it once a week at the beginning of my work week. The charge lasts all week during my shifts. It is very bright and appears to be just as durable as my old trusty SL-20X. I especially like that this light will charge in the original charging sleeve of the SL-20X so all of the SL-20 have one charger.I would recommend to anyone who needs the use of professional grade handheld lights to think very seriously about investing their money into this one. I remember paying over $100 25 years ago for the SL-20X, but it is still alive and strong and has been a valuable asset. I purchased this SL-20L with hopes it will serve me just as faithfully, and so far I have no complaints. Honestly, with the background and lifetime warranty Streamlight provides for all of their products, this is a win win deal. You won't go wrong with buying this light. I paid a little extra and purchased the one with new NiMH battery, which seems to be well worth the extra few dollars to allow me to use one charge all week long. 5Great flashlight to have around the houseWe have this hat plugged in in a corner of the house, always ready for a power outage, nighttime walks, and other uses where we need light around the house. Great value, great product.5Light, Brite, easy to use and charge and will last a lifetime!I use this for work and around the house. It's incredibly brought, long lasting and hard as nails. This should last me at least another 10-15 years! Has a good grip. Charges quickly and is INCREDIBLY durable!5Amazing light!Amazing!! By far the best light I ve ever purchased! CHP uses this light and for good reason. It s one of the best.I ran mine over and it s still working! Barely any scratches too!For the price.. it s worth the buy.5Very DisappointedBrightest flashlight I have ever owned. Unfortunately, after less than nine months of very light use it has stopped working correctly. The brightest setting only works for about one or two minutes before turning down to the lowest setting. I do not know if this is the battery or a faulty switch but it is ridiculous for a flashlight costing over a hundred dollars. This light should of lasted for years to come and didn't even last a year. I would consider spending less on another flashlight. It is not worth the money to be this disappointed.1Bright!!!I love Streamlight products. This light is a great light, very long throwing tight hotspot. For 350 lumens rating it seems like its brighter than that. However, I put a new 1,000 lumen drop in in my mag lite and am now using that as my primary. This light rides as my back up.5which is pretty crappy considering that Streamlight knows there is a defect ...There is an issue on these lights with the LED module failing. Streamlight will consider covering it under warranty, but you have to pay the shipping fees, which is pretty crappy considering that Streamlight knows there is a defect in the electronics of this light, and based on that should pay for shipping at a minimum. My old Streamlight from a decade ago was a workhorse, but their newer lights, like so many other things these days, are more cheaply made, and when they break the customer service is weak.1The gift for the man who has everything... EDITED; December 11, 2014!!ON EDIT; December 11, 2014, I have purchased a total of 14 of these lights so far as Christmas Gifts and have had to return several of them for repair as they go from "high" to the "Low" setting after about 10 seconds of use. Sometimes they will just turn off. I called Streamlight and they said they would repair it without charge under warranty. I'm getting ready to return two more of them today, one of which is going in for its second repair. When I called their repair department to explain the problem I had a completely different experience from before, as the fellow was a rude and really didn't care to hear about my problem. I suspect that all of the lights that I have given as gifts are defective, as people generally don't want to tell a gift giver about problems, however, those friends that I've inquired of all have the same issue.I also have noticed that Streamlight has changed their warranty from a "Total Lifetime" to a "Limited Lifetime". These issue are probably the reason why. What a shame! This "WAS!!!" a great American company.END EDITI have written a review on here before which pretty much sums up what a shining example of American Engineering this light is. Like anything man made, they do break. My older one did, it was 32 years old when the switch broke. I mailed it to them last week, to their facility in Pennsylvania where they said they will fix it and ship it back to me "FREE". After 32 years I can't complain.Great Product, built like an anvil! Their service people were very professional and courteous. With a Lifetime warranty, what more could one as for?The woman (Ann) in the service department didn't have your typical foreign accent as she is from Southern Pennsylvania and she said she would probably be the one fixing my light. This is an uncommon standard in a day where EVERYTHING is made in China and no one cares about you after they have your money. This new model (SL-20L) 20703 has a LED bulb that lasts over 20 years and it (the bulb) is covered by the lifetime warranty. The LED is much brighter than my old halogen light. The halogen bulb lasts only 30 hours and are not a warranty item. I have bought three of these new models this year, had to, my wife liked mine so well she started using it to walk the dog. We have many bears in our area live she feels like she has something to use as a weapon at night. I have mine in my vehicle in the DC charger. It is always charged and ready to go.Installation is very easy. The model 20703 comes with separate AC and DC charger for in the house and vehicle. I have given one to a friend as gift and get repeated thanks as he uses it daily.I ordered my wife and daughter the Streamlight 73003 Nano Light Miniature Keychain LED Flashlight, in Pink. They are tiny but are as bright as a regular size flashlight. They love them. They cost less than $10. I remember on 9/11, so many people being caught in those buildings with no light to see to find their way out.Bottom line, this light is well worth your hard earned money.1Great duty light I work nights and this light does the trick. It has a very far beam and easy to manipulate 5IssuesI have been having issues with this light since I bought it. The on/off button is garbage, it consistently won't turn on or immediately turns off after it's turned on. Also, recently, the light keeps turning off on me for no apparent reason. It illuminates for a good solid five seconds...then goes off. Not sure what to do with this thing. Considering the cost, I shouldn't have these problems.3Best flashlight everI can see my fence line 500' away, at night. Great for checking for coyotes and mountain lions, with the livestock guardian dogs sound the alarm. Awesome flashlight.5Great lightI purchased this as an upgrade to the full size Pelican 8060 light. I liked the 8060, but this new generation streamlight is brighter and has more features, so I thought to give it a try.Battery life is long, although I haven't tested it out as long as the 8060. The aluminum construction is a definate plus. Only downside I can see is it lacks a "no roll" feature, and according to streamlight, they won't be changing the design. When purchasing, I wasn't sure if you could use it for momentary on since the mode selection wasnt explained in any of the online demos I saw. It works like this: you have normal off/ on constant and momentary. From off- double click for strobe. From off hold all the way down (clicking to on) and keep holding for brightness adjust. It resets to full power after turning off every time.Hope this helps anyone reading!5I love how bright it is I bought this flashlight for work so I could upgrade my 20 year old Streamlight. I love how bright it is. Other guys at work are now wanting to buy the same light. It is a must have for a person who's life depends on target identification. 5
