Customer Reviews

Works for integration HP ZBook Studio G3 with an Apple Thunderbolt display.I wanted to try using my apple thunderbolt display (27") with a HP ZBook Studio G3 and the HP dock. Plugged the Thunderbolt display into this unit from StarTech and plugged that into the HP Dock's Thunderbolt 3 port and - it just worked. I got a warning from the HP/Intel Thunderbolt software about the display not being designed for use with a PC when setting it up - but after that it displays perfectly and looks fantastic.5WILL NOT WORK WITH LENOVO YOGA 920 & APPLE THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY!Item didn't work as intended (or at all for that matter) using it to connect a LENOVO YOGA 920 (USB-C) and APPLE THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY (MC914LL/B). In theory it should have worked. The INTEL Thunderbolt software did recognize the display and ask for permission etc. However when it came to a actual connection that was useful the Thunderbolt software showed as "Not Connected" and subsequently as you guessed, it didn't work. After a good amount of online research my thinking is that there is a chipset specific marriage that must be made between the devices. What that is? I don't know. Others have reported success with this adapter and other computers setups. My strategy for anyone that is interested is to find a older MacBook or MacMini that will work with this monitor. And to be honest the LENOVO YOGA 920 with its UHD display 512HDD and 16GB Ram is a portable powerhouse that doesn't need a external monitor.2Did not work for me...Bought this adapter over the apple based on reviews here and elsewhere. Didn't work for me. Using a Clarett 4 pre into a Gigabyte 270 MB with built-in usb-c/thunderbolt 3 port. Computer could not see the Clarett with the Startech adapter. The apple adapter DOES work in this situation. Yours may not--trial & error for me.1Works with Digidesign 002 Rack (via Apple TB to 1394 dongle) and Avid Native Thunderbolt Works with Digidesign 002 Rack (via Apple TB to 1394 dongle) and Avid Native Thunderbolt.Does not like being daisy chained to ANY docking station. I literally ordered and returned every TB3 docking station w/ power delivery on Amazon and they all sucked. The Cablematters and Caldigit docking stations "worked" with my Digi 002 and this dongle daisy chained but it made the docks unstable. The Caldigit one worked fairly consistently if I reversed the TB3 ports but then I no longer had power delivery to my laptop. I believe the Startech was not able to get enough power to my firewire dongle when daisy chained the proper way (TB3 power going to laptop, 2nd TB3 port going to the dongle)My gripe with this dongle is that the connector is very loose when plugged into my TB3 port on my laptop unlike the Apple TB3 to TB2 dongle (which did not work with my Avid Native)I am on Windows 10. HP Spectre x360 i7 8550u MX150. 3Great for external SSD on laptop w/ TB3 but no eSATAPrior to attempting to use this I made sure my Thunderbolt 3 Dell Precision 5510 had the most recent bios and applicable firmware and software installed. (The Dell 5510 doesn't have an eSATA port.)I connected a thunderbolt ssd (LaCie rugged 256GB) through this (with internal ssd disconnected from mobo) and it was recognized on boot. I was able to wipe the external ssd and do a clean win 10 install with no problems (then reconnected internal ssd). Now I have a dual boot system when the external ssd is attached via this adapter. Works great!I considered using the AkiTio Thunder3 enclosure with an existing ssd I had but the AkiTio is less portable than my solution.5Nice way of conecting lecay thunderbolt devices to a thunderbolt 3 manchine. The good:It works. It is a nice way of connecting legacy thunderbolt devices to a new thunderbolt machine. The bad:It does not support apple OS X systems.Due to the adapter weight, sometimes my thunderbolt chain gets disconnected.I think I'll have to try the apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter to see if I can get more consistent results. The ugly:While not caused by StarTech itself, for it to work I had to install latest BIOS, thunderbolt firmware, chip-set and thunderbolt drivers.3Works perfectly with my Apollo Twin Duo ThunderboltI purchased this little adapter because it was the only way my Apollo Twin Duo Thunderbolt interface would be compatible with my new workstation PC, and I will say it works just like it should and I haven't had any problems with it yet. Don't buy the Apple branded one, that one will not work for you if you're in the same situation.5Works w/ Thunderbolt 3 Dell Precision 7510 w/ Apple Thunderbolt monitor and Linux Mint 18.3 I had an Apple Thunderbolt monitor just sitting around collecting dust that I could no longer use except with legacy equipment because somebody decided to change the Thunderbolt connector and I had long given up on Apple products. Anyway, I bought the StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter (TBT3TBTADAP) hoping that I would be able to put the monitor to use on a Dell laptop. On top of that, I choose to run Linux Mint 18.3 (Cinnamon desktop) on this laptop. I plugged in the adapter, plugged in the monitor and it worked! This product saved me from effectively having a $1000 paperweight! Even the sound and the built-in USB ports work. I have not been able to test the Thunderbolt passthrough, the firewire (IEEE 1394), or ethernet ports. I give it 5-stars.Equipment: 2012 Apple Thunderbolt displayDell Precision 7510 w/ Thunderbolt-3Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 18.3 5Solid and reliable. No issues with MacBook Pro and Apple 27" Thunderbolt DisplayWorks great with my 2017 MacBook Pro connected to my Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display which is then going to a G-Raid Technology G-RAID Thunderbolt HD which then goest to a Focusrite Clarett 8PreX. No problems at all.The only "limitation" I ran into is I had to connect the adapter directly to a USB-C ports on the MacBook Pro. I tried a USB-C extension cable directly to USB-C port so the box wouldn't be so close to my laptop but I couldn't get the 27" Apple display to work. I also tried connecting the adapter to a Hyperdrive Duo USB-C hub USB-C port and the display would not work with that either. Not a big deal and at some point I plan to get a native USB-C monitor like an LG that also charges my MBP.5Apple version is half the price with the same functionalityThis device is plug and play. It is a competitor to apple's version which I also own. I purchased this startech version because it claims to be more versatile than the apple version by also converting USB 3.2 to thunderbolt 2 in addition to thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 conversions. This feature did not work for me. This device is on par with apple's version, but apple's is much less expensive. I tested the usb 3.2 support with my 2012 macbook 12 inch which is only USB-c 3.2 connected to a thunderbolt 2 drive and it did not work. I also test it going the other direction with a USB-c 3.2 raid connected to my mac pro 2013 thunderbolt 2 port and it did not work.In closing this product only works based on my tests for converting thunderbolt 2 to 3 and vise versa and it does NOT work dispite its claims on any usb type c 3.2 drives or computer connections. At least not for me.2Apple Thunderbolt Display (Mini Displayport) to a Windows PC using a USB-C connector? This is the App for that. A+On a new PC build, using this motherboard: Gigabyte LGA1151 Intel Z170 2-Way SLI ATX DDR4 Motherboards GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 , I was itching to use my Thunderbolt display from Apple since about 2 years ago I spent over $1,000 at the Apple store for it (the one like this: Apple MC914LL/B 27-inch Thunderbolt Display ) - and well, it was meant to be more than just a pretty paperweight. Actually the newly-obsolete Apple Thunderbolt display itself is quite good. It's a shame that Apple didn't continue that business (for now). The downside is that it's a Thunderbolt 2 device that's - confusingly - a mini Display port. Even more confusingly, when I bought the motherboard and it came with a USB-C connector on the back. I thought "oh, I just need a cable.." not really. The motherboard is Thunderbolt 3 and the monitor is Thunderbolt 2. Fast forward to the end here: this product works GREAT to connect a PC/Laptop that has a Thunderbolt 3 USB-C connector (Dell, HP, etc) to an Apple Thunderbolt Display. Beyond the basics of it working as a display, I haven't invested time to get the drivers to work for the camera, speakers, etc inside the display, but there are some sites out there that document how to do it by borrowing drivers from bootcamp. As other viewers noted though, an Apple MacBook with a USB-C connector doesn't use Thunderbolt 3 signalling, so for that purpose this adapter is unlikely to do anything. Make no mistake: this adapter is expensive. But to spend about $75-80 to make an already-owned good Apple monitor work on a new Windows PC to me was worth it.5Don't buy Apple. Apollo Twin to PC works.I purchased this (StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter) in 2017 to allow me to attach my Universal Audio Apollo Twin Duo 2 to my Windows 10 based 17" Acer Predator laptop that had a Thunderbolt 3 port. Worked flawlessly. I now need to attach an older Firewire Audio Interface to my new MacBook Pro that only has ONE Thunderbolt 3 port. The firewire to Thunderbolt 3 adapter does not exist and never will (given that its not available by now by anyone). Apple would have you spend $29.00 for a Firewire to Thunderbolt TWO STYLE adapter. (this has a DIFFERENT style plug than a thunderbolt 3 cable) of course! Then you would have to pay an ADDITIONAL $49.00 MORE for another adapter to make this work. I was about to pay another $49.00 Until I REMEMBERED I owned this adapter..So I only needed to purchase the $29.00 firewire adapter. I then plugged it into my new 2020 apple computer and everything worked. A good part of apples Research and Development goes into making their products incompatible in such a way that you are forced to either 1: upgrade and trash what you are currently using. 2: computers the are incompatible with any device that they do not manufacture and sell. 3: peripherals that can be made to fail in short order and that are a necessary component to operate their devices....all apple cable I have owned have fallen apart at both ends in short order.5
