Customer Reviews

Just what I neededThis was a great way to consolidate all the old laptop hard drives I had laying around. I originally had them in individual external enclosures, but that made for a lot of clutter and connecting and disconnecting drives when I wanted to use them. I shucked 4 of my external drives and popped them in here, and not only is there less clutter, it's easier to use as well. I'm currently using it with 2x640GB, plus 500GB and 320GB drives, but I did test it with 1TB and 2TB drives and it worked. My only gripe is that the fan is a bit loud, but you can turn it off (or just leave the whole cover off if you're worried about cooling). When I connect this to a single USB port on my Windows 10 or Linux computers all four drives show up individually. There is no RAID function (although you could probably setup software RAID if you wanted to). Data read/write speeds are good over USB 3.0, and it is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 if you need it.4Overall good, but odd..Initial setup up was simple, it was literally plug and play. I will be putting in three SSD's (4 slots available).Oddity: As I added my drives into slots 1, 2, 3 something weird was noticed. Only the drive in 1 shows up in the Windows 10 explorer. Played around a bit swapping drive position and reviewed the Computer drive manager to no avail. So I decided to use only slot 2, 3, 4...and viola, all three drives showed up without issues. Just to validate, I randomly moved the drive in slot 3 to 1, and drive 2, 4 disappeared. Leaving only drive 1 showing up again. Not sure if this is a feature or what, but seems strange. There is no mentioned of this anomaly in the instruction pamphlet. Luckily the slot position and drive letters are independent.Oh well. I'll see what happens if I decide to add a fourth drive, but for now, three is all I need.On the pesky fan noise. Yes it is loud like a distant jet engine firing up. My drives run cool, so I'll rarely turn it on unless I plan to do a lot of copy activity...otherwise they will remain as just storage devices. Other than that, it looks and feels sturdy.BTW: Shipment sucks by Amazon. No outer brown box. Just the shipping label on the retail box- seriously..which has an unsealed flap that exposes the unit. I'm surprised nothing fell out during processing/shipping...or did it. Purely laziness by the packing crew.4Had A Lot Of Promise. Only Provided a Lot of Frustration.I have always liked, trusted and purchased Sabrent products. Thought I could purchase this as a cheap man's attached storage to use as a DVR to my mini Win 10 HTPC. I have Synology DS409slim and DS416slim 2.5" NAS boxes and thought this could give me similar capability as a side mounted USB external drive on the cheap.Tried though I might I could not make it work. Sadly, even with it's low price, because of its limitations I can't see any functional use for this product at all. In the end I purchased another DS416slim and relegated DVR duties to my DS409slim.As advertised the drives are accessible at flash SSD speeds. The drives are easily installed and it looks as if this enclosure can accommodate even 15mm tall drives. This product had the possibility of displacing the DS4XXslim series as the only 4 bay 2.5" device on the market. Sad that it misses this mark by a large marginFanFirst of its certainly nice that it has a fan, however you'll probably never want turn it on. It is very loud. If you fill this box with SSD's you don't need it. However if you use HDD's with the lid on without the fan they will surely overheat. Just one HDD in this box without the fan, ran so hot I was concerned the drive would fail prematurely. They should have given the option to set the fan speed.LED lights. The LED's are overly bright. It would be nice to dim them or turn them off entirely. Surely a minor issue but annoying when you turn off the lights and watch TV with this in the room. Not Hot SwappableThis was the deal breaker. When drives are plugged in, the other installed drives rebooted. Sometimes the drives did not reinstall themselves and remained offline. I used a mix of SSD's from Samsung, Crucial and Silicon Power and a WD HDD.Although the ardvert says "Hot Swappable" I did not find it to be the case. If I formatted a drive and then unplugged and then reinstalled to the same slot, frequently the drive would not reappear in Windows Explorer. I could take that same drive and put it into a different enclosure (Sabrent EC-RDSV) and it would display with a drive letter properly in Explorer. Put it back into the DS-4SSD and the drive is still unreadable. Move a drive to any of the other slot of the DS-4SSD and you risk it being unreadable.I tried combining multiple drives into one using Disk Manager. Win 10 would not allow this. I tried doing the same thing in Storage Spaces in Win 10. Often it would fail to work though I tried many different drive combinations. Each and every time when it did allow the DS-4SSD to create a Storage Space, in a short time it would post an error saying one of the drives was not available. Often the Storage Space could not be removed and the SSD's and HDD were "bricked". I had to find a Win 7 computer and use Disk Manager and the Diskpart command to recover them.Once some of these drives had been "bricked" and recovered, the DS-4SSD would not only not recognize them, but plugging these in would sometime make the other "unbricked" drives disappear. Incidentally I was able to use two Sabrent EC-RDSV enclosures and create and remove Storage Spaces with my drives without incident. There is something wrong with the product or my copy of it.It is not easy to reach out to Sabrent to get support. No tech support phone number. This product in my opinion has a lot of promise. If it worked it could have been valued much higher. However as it is it was a waste of a week of my time and $60.00.My wife after seeing all my frustrated attempts to get this working urged me to buy another $300 DS416slim. I put all of my "bricked" and "un-"bricked" drives into it. It formatted them without incident, combined them into a RAID5 partition using SHR. I created an iSCSI share that was designated as the D drive. I configured my Silicon Dust DVR onto the iSCSI share and went to bed peacefully for the first time in a week.Sabrent, sorry. Wanted to like this. Couldn't.Regards All and Good Night1Great Dock, Loud Fan.Had a bunch of old HDDs and SSDs laying around from laptops that were upgraded or taken out for security collecting dust instead of being used for something useful. This docking station was just the ticket to put them to use. I have all four bays loaded with various types and capacities of drives and all are working great. I have the Docking Station plugged into the USB 3 port on my Netgear router using it's ReadyShare feature to have a poor man's NAS. I have all the drives mapped in Windows 10 and they are always online and ready for use. Because it is on my network already I can also access it with my phone and smart TV to watch movies that I store on one of the drives. I'm also able to utilize them as a backup drive for my computers.Only gripe I have with the unit is the fan is not very quiet when you have it on. While it is nice to be able to turn the fan on or off with a button on the front of the unit I find for my sanity to just remove the fan cover from the unit and let the drives radiate the heat to the air instead. Only problem with that option is you have 4 bare drive sticking out of it and it doesn't have the nice look of the unit when covered by the fan.5Pretty great value - not everything is thereSo I got this thing for my poor-man's NAS and loaded it up with 4 1TB 5400RPM HDDs.First things first, the fan is pretty loud. Way too loud to have it running 24/7 in a living room setting. Without the fan and even with the cover removed, my Seagate disks were getting quite hot under heavy load, above 55 degrees celsius, enough to trigger a S.M.A.R.T error. With the cover on and fan running they'd dip to the low 30s, which is just fine... even colder than is really necessary.I replaced the fan with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FBPQQR4 which significantly lowered the volume; the drives under heavy load now hit up to 43 degrees C, and only up to 39C with a shim (I used a penny...) between the base and cover to allow more airflow. The fan was very easy to replace, involving 4 screws accessed from the underside of the fan enclosure. Wish Sabrent had installed a quieter fan in the factory. According to a study by Google, the mid 30s to 40 degrees celsius range is ideal for HDDs, so I'm happy now.Besides temperatures and fan loudness, my only other issue with this product is its lack of UASP support... would give me a bit of extra performance in my use-case, particularly with reads.Overall, pretty satisfied with the product for the price given my use case.4but after some modification everything is working great. The performance is good for a USB 3So I purchased this to go with my eGPU dock for my 2017 MacBook Pro. I've got two 2.5" SSD's and two 4GB 2.5" drives. The 2.5" drives will NOT FIT without modification with a dremmel -- which was quite a bit of plastic surgery, but after some modification everything is working great. The performance is good for a USB 3.0 device, and I'm getting about 80% of the performance of a direct-connect single drive.5Great quality, easy to use, perfect for RAID configurationsI purchased this docking station because I had several 250-750GB SSD's laying around that I wanted to put to work without creating a mess of cables that would take up I/O ports. For that purpose, this works great. I plugged in a 1TB HDD that I use for random storage, and then added the 3 SSD's which I turned into a RAID 0.Although it is somewhat light, the build quality is great. The fan *IS* loud, but it's not necessary to run it all the time, so I only use it when the drives are working hard with reads/writes. Most of the time I just leave the top off.All in all, great product that I'd highly recommend.5Great Dock for 12mm drives - 15mm work with modsI love this dock! It was not clear on the product page but as delivered it will only fit up to 12mm drives, so no larger than 2TB. HOWEVER with a bit of time and a dremmel tool I have installed 3 15mm 4TB drives and a 2 TB drive. Works great, fan keeps them all cool. Very fast and sexy :) Hope Sabrent eventually remolds this to hold the 15mm drives, only needs a new mid section.5Good idea, horrible executionOn paper, this sounds like a great idea - use 4 2.5 inch SSDs or HDDs, maybe set them up in a RAID, and have them in a nice compact enclosure with USB3 for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, whatever bridge chip they're using seems to be pretty flaky, larger drives (15mm) will not fit without modification, and even with modification the 4th slot cannot accept a 15mm drive due to physical constraints. Since the drives are detected as removable drives, it's difficult to create a stable RAID with them. The fan is also obnoxiously loud. Although it only supports 2 HDDs and is a bit pricier, I have gone with the Akitio SK2520 and I am much happier with that enclosure. The Akitio supports 15mm drives out of the box, has built-in RAID functionality, and is fanless (the entire enclosure is metal and acts as a heatsink).2Solid buildSolid build, no issues with 4 new ssd. Read all 4 as separate drives, then i made a raid array.. no issues.5
