Works exactly as expectedI hve two Intel NUCs, a laptop and a desktop with no optical drive so I use a USB powered portable Blu-ray burner when I need it for those machines,. Unfortunately none of those machines are able to power it without help, so I use a powered hub. I lost my old hub though and finally, after a frantic search for it failed, broke down and ordered this new one.I didn't read any reviews before I ordered it and would have probably went for a more expensive one had I done so, but I haven't see any issues with it. The plug fits fine, sure there is a little metal visible on the power prong when you plug it in, but just two freaking millimeters! No quality issues with any of the plugs either and I tried it with all four machines and it works fine. No noticeable heat issues either. I'll likely never have it plugged in all the time though- only when I need to use an external drive.5Beware: Power feedback! Careful with this USB hub. When working on my computer recently I pulled the power cord, and when I opened it the light was still on when I looked at the motherboard. I eventually pulled all the cords and found that this hub (which is living on the end of an extension) was feeding power back into the motherboard. I have pulled the plug on this hub permanently, so it does not ruin the computer. Find a different hub should you need to use power. 1Great when you need a POWERED USB hubMany people don t realize that some USB devices require more power than a single USB port from a computer can support. As computers and laptops get smaller and run on ever lower energy, using a USB hub and plugging several devices that are power hungry can result in overload on a cpu motherboard. This simple powered USB port is compact, low cost, and allows you to expand your ports AND feed power hungry devices line external hard drives, smart phones, wireless adapters, printers...5Good for something... but not a USB hubAt least this product is good for something: to rip apart and see what the insides look like. It sure isn't any good as a USB hub. Three issues: 1) the round connector on the power adapter, 3x8 mm (measured) does not seem compatible with the hub itself; it does not insert completely into the body although the locking indent appears to get captured, 2) the USB connectors appear to be floating inside the case and not securely fastened, and 3) the blue power indicator goes on and off as the USB pig-tale is moved about suggesting an intermittent power connection. Items 1 and 2 are not fatal flaws, just signs of a cheap product. However, item 3 has the possibility of doing damage to my computer depending on what is causing the symptom.Because I have several USB hard drives waiting to be looked at that couldn't be put off much longer, I ended up driving about 100 miles (ain't rural living great?) to buy another USB hub; cost (within reason) wasn't the issue. As for cost, the cheap price of this cheap device makes it not worth shipping back but instead to become a learning aid to be (destructively) disassembled.I'm not holding the vender responsible other than he should be more selective of the quality of the merchandise he sells, regardless of how inexpensive it is.1DANGEROUS DEVICE!WARNING. This causes restart & boot problems & might damage your components. It fried my $50 webcam & now it won't show video on any computer I try it on. Amazon gave me back my money for the hub because they are awesome. But now I have to buy a new webcam.1Suggest not using on desktop rear ports......because the cord on this hub is very short.I feel this would be a decent device for my laptop, but the power adapter is a mixed blessing.Power adapter: Good, because some USB devices want the USB port to deliver power. Bad, because if you need that adapter in a coffee shop or other remote setting, it isn't going to deliver the power.Otherwise, it works great.3Great unit for a great priceWhat's to say about this? It connects up to 4 different USB connectors into one hub. I will say the connections are extremely tight - what I would call "hospital grade". Initially I thought it was defective, they were so tight. You have to apply some force to push USB connectors into it, but once in, they will STAY. I bought two of these, as I never seem to have enough USB ports on my machine!5Will destroy your external hard drive. After using this adapter for less than an hour my external hard drive started causing kernel panics on my computer, also on my AirPort Extreme and also on a second computer in our home just for the sake of testing. Now a hard drive I've used for years without issue and holds almost a full terabyte of data is completely unusable and the info is all lost. Do not buy this product. 1Power adapter plug seems like an extra addon. I will not buy againThe power cord came loose, separate from the USB Hub which was in its own packaging and it does not plug all the way in, making me kinda scared to use it in case the metal part that is still sticking out touches something metal. I also did not check to see if the polarity of the plug matches that of the Hub, something that really needs to match or you can have major issues. I will never buy something like this again from this seller if they think this s acceptable to send to customers. I will use the USB Hub as a non-powered one since I would have to pay shipping to send it back. My advice: Do NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT, SINCE YOU WILL BE LEFT WITH JUST AN UNPOWERED USB HUB.1It's cheap, but know your tech: These hubs don't comply with USB spec and will backfeed power!Needed a powered hub for a Raspberry Pi project, this was cheap and came with an adapter. By the way, it's not listed anywhere in the description, but this is a 3.4mm barrel connector powering it: I was going to scrap the supply that came with it, but found this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X7B1WUQ/ and it works well to power the hub from a battery. It's possible to cut the 5v (red) wire leading to the PC if you want to avoid feedback. Of course this will mean that you have to use the power supply after that, in the current configuration it's (sort of) optional. Ideally there would be a diode that allows the PC to power it when it's not plugged into the wall and prevent feedback, but like I said, it's cheap. I might look into adding just that.As others have mentioned, you can take advantage of this (out of spec) design for things like powering a Pi Zero via the OTG port. Even knowing this, I'm not giving it 5 stars because they don't warn people in the description and it's already proven to be inconsistent recognizing devices plugged into it. I haven't tracked down the issue, but I suspect it's related to the feedback problem. I had to plug everything in, launch my software and then power the hub, ewwww. Something's off.4SureGreat. Does just what it is supposed to do. I looked at several and ended up with this one. I am quite happy with it. I needed to connect the external drive - two drives - to the router so we can do wireless back ups on the laptops and phones. Works like a charm.5Caveat: gave to daughter, but works well. This was an accidental buy - it was hanging out in my cart when I purchased something else and I had forgotten to remove it; so I gave it to my daughter, who's using it with her Microsoft Surface Pro 2. It works great with the SurPro2 and her Wacom USB tablet, also when connected to her 60" UHD TV for drawing and playing games - the display timing works and it's very quick. The only complaint she has is, the socket for the external power adaptor has no documentation as to its polarity or voltage requirements, so it's basically useless.4
