Etkcity box allow the use of old VCR with digital TVThis device allows me to use my old VHS recorder/player through the HDMI port on my digital TV. The picture is fantastic. It was exceptionally easy to hook up. I was forced to use this when the new cable company box had to be connected with the RGB inputs on the TV. That meant I could not use those connections for my VCR. With this device I could run my RGB connections from my VCR to the Etekcity box and then an HDMI cable from the Etekcity box to the TV. I am very pleased with this device which allowed me to use my VCR. 5Thanks at least for making the return process easy.I wanted this to be able to continue to use my 301 DVD player with component output on a projector via HDMI switching, to avoid running lots of cables back to the projector. I plugged it all up and it worked first time, producing full frame colour picture obviously as designed; but the picture had moving wavy lines uniformly spread over the whole frame, making it unwatchable. No combination of signals I could send were any different. It may work with something else - it didn't produce a watchable picture with my Pioneer 301 DVD player, so it had to go back. Thanks at least for making the return process easy. 2device is defectiveI waited too long to check this converter for operability and now it is just another landfill item and I am out my purchase cost. First time I tried it it did not work at all. Although the blinding blue power led lights up the corresponding input detected light does not. I checked the signal going into this box, of course, and it is fine. I just wanted to free up the component inputs on my Vizio TV for another use by converting one of my sources from component to HDMI. I tried it anyway using a good HDMI cable between the converter and the TV. Alas this unit was junk. I will presume it is just an example of poor quality control out of the factory that produces it, and perhaps a rare defect, as other users of this device had happier experiences. But I will look elsewhere for a converter. 1A good product for gaming, if a little cheap.I've been using this thing to hook up my Nintendo Wii to my gaming monitor to play Project M (A mod of Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Look it up if you like the series, especially the competitive side. It's completely free, easy to install and run and all you need is a copy of Brawl and a 2GB SD Card.) with less input lag than I have on my LCD TV. As I've been playing the game and learning some of the advanced techniques that are used in the competitive scene, I found that I was having a lot of trouble with characters that have an extremely reactive playstyle like Sheik and Lucario while playing on the TV. Overall, the game just felt really unresponsive and I originally attributed that to not being very familiar to the controls but on a whim I looked up the input lag rating on my TV and found that it had a delay of about 50ms (for those not familiar, input lag is of course the delay between when you hit a button and when the resulting action appears onscreen) which is dreadful.I know that it may not sound too bad, but in a game when it's not uncommon to put in 8+ inputs per second it makes a huge difference, especially for speedy characters. My Monitor however, is rated at about 10ms-12ms which is a significant improvement. I bought this converter to plug my console into my monitor to see if it would make a difference in my ability to do certain things in the game and it's made a huge improvement. It may not be something that you can see, but it's definitely something that you can feel. The game just feels so much smoother and more responsive, there's just really no comparison. Especially when you try switching back to what you had before.Setup was easy, all I had to do was plug in the power cable, the component cable from the Wii, and the HDMI cable going into the Monitor and it was up and running in under a minute. I haven't had any issues with it yet either, though I'm not using it super heavily - just 1-3 hours a day for around 3 months. The only gripes I have are: there are no rubber feet or anything on the bottom, there is no power switch so the only way to turn it off is to disconnect the power (something I have to do every time or else it wakes up the monitor every few minutes when not in use), and it feels sort of cheap. The casing seems to be made of metal which is good, but it feels really light. Like the slightest drop might cause it to break entirely.Overall I would recommend this if you're looking for a way to plug-in a device with a Component out to a screen with an HDMI in port. Though you won't get the same difference I have had unless you have a similar setup to mine of course, the difference is between the two screens not the converter. 4Works exactly as it is supposed toI am using this to add a second HDTV to a dish network VIP722 receiver. This receiver only has one HDMI output, but does have a component output. Plugged this in and ran a 45' HDMI cable to the second set and everything works perfectly. I used a HDMI splitter before, but that caused problems with the Dolby Digital signal on the first set. It would drop audio channels or revert to stereo instead of surround. With this, the signal to the main set is unaltered and the DD audio works like before adding the second set. The second set just has L/R audio which is all we need. 5A good buyIt is a noticeable improvement. I've used it with my Wii, PSP, and DVD player with this and the picture is cleaner, crisp and sharp, and colors are much more vibrant. I had to adjust my picture with the Wii before I got this because the contrast was way off, but now it looks great. The only annoyance is the design of the unit itself; inputs are one side, A/C in and HDMI are on the other, so it is kind of awkward with the cable setup. Not bad, though, just a minor annoyance. 4Works as advertised--UPDATE malfunctioned after 3 weeksI'm using the converter to add a second HDMI output from an older DirecTV box to a second monitor. Works fine, but note that output from some channels won't decode since DTV box doesn't appear to recognize converted signal as a true HDMI signal.UPDATE: after 3 weeks, the product no longer functions properly. The entire picture on the TV connected to the output of this box shifted to the left so that a third of it doesn't show and a black bar appears on the right side. A direct connection bypassing the box showed that the TV is functioning normally, so this converter is the only possible problem. The product had to be returned today for refund. 1Wow that didn't last long....I hardly owned this item 3 months and maybe used it a dozen times. Finally burnt out today. Unfortunately it 14 days pass returnable. How convenient! I really wish I could get a replacement. I can't believe I spent this much on something that burnt out! Complete waste of money. Quality was bleh on the screen... the actual recording was good after looking in playback.I used it in combination with my avermedia hd pvr to record some random tournaments on the ps3. My tv does not have component inputs so I needed this to convert the component to hdmi. It worked okay. I should have returned it after the 2nd use when it started to randomly flicker.Probably one of the worst electronic devices I've purchased in a long time. Belongs in a discount store. 1Did exactly what I had hoped. It was a long and involved trip to find a solution to this problem. The component to HDMI converter was it.I was trying to connect a Cisco cable box to a Sharp Aquos 70" TouchWall (touchscreen monitor). Initially, the cable company brought the cable run in across the room. I tried a wireless HDMI extender and couldn't get a picture. For a week, I worked back and forth between the HDMI extender mfgr and the cable co to resolve the problem. The key piece of information was that the cable box has to recognize the attached HDMI equipment as a TV or it won't transmit. It was interesting that the cable box would transmit to a PC monitor that was connected directly. The HDMI-extender company sent out what I would call a "spoofer" and we did a firmware upgrade that was supposed to make the extender look like a TV. It didn't work. I next tried the HDMI extender with a satellite-provider's equipment and it worked beautifully. The cable company wouldn't provide an HDMI cable long enough (30') to test a direct connection, but they did re-run the cable to the opposite wall where the TouchWall is located. It still didn't work, though. Again, the consensus was that TouchWall monitor did not look like a TV to the cable box. (Thank you DMCA.) We swapped cable boxes for the previous model, a Scientific Atlanta. That also didn't work via HDMI. The good news was that the Scientific Atlanta box had component out jacks.Knowing that HDMI is a two-way digital connection and that component is one-way analog, I hoped that the SA box would be unable to tell what it was connected to. Luckily, I was correct because the only alternative was to switch content providers or buy a new monitor/TV.Up close, the picture quality is just a smidge below a direct HDMI feed. You might not notice if you weren't looking for it. I was having read a product reviews across a range of products. From across the room, it looks great. What I'm wondering now, is would this have with the wireless HDMI extender, which I had already returned. I have a feeling it would have. 5Goood Unit-But didn't work for meI purchased a new TV that only had one shared component/composite input, but I have a DVD and a VCR that I wanted to use; Y splitter cables did not work. I bought this to hook up the component DVD to HDMI and use the composite VCR with the TV input. The picture quality of the DVD dropped dramatically with this adapter. I believe that if you have a component VCR this will fit your needs, as the quality of VHS isn't that great anyway. It will probably work well with other component devices.I returned it and will order a composite to HDMI unit. I will hook up the DVD to the component TV input and use the new adapter for the VCR. Hope it will work; I do not like to keep changing cables when switching between units.I am giving this 4 stars because it does what is advertised to do and I feel that the company is very reputable; refund was very fast. Hope this helps with one's decision! 4
