Customer Reviews

Great Device for the MoneyAfter some trial and error I finally found an external harddrive that the pogoplug would recognize. The first one I tried wouldn't show up on the Pogoplug website even though it was connected correctly. I drive it liked had it's own power supply and the first one I tried didn't so I wonder if that was the problem. So now instead of backing up to the Pogoplug server and using my free 5? GB account I have the photos from all the family's cell phones backing up directly to my own harddrive sitting in my house. For less than 20 bucks this is a great device. I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn't had the issue with the first hard drive. Pogoplug pushes it's cloud storage service on you when you first set the device up but you don't have to use it. You can store items to your own drive.4Not for me as shipped - Updated ReviewI am sure this is a great device for those on high-speed cable with tons of bandwidth. But for anyone on satellite plans, beware. You cannot do anything without being connected to the net. Even if you turn on function to show drive under "My Computer" cannot use drive unless connected to the net. Then - if you close the provided (must download) software, the drive disappears.I understand the main function is "cloud", but not being able to share drive on local network all the time, even when net is turned off is real bummer. On the up side, if you are looking for a device to backup "documents" and access from anywhere this device may be 5 stars to you.UPDATE: I have now removed the Pogo'ware and replaced it with ARM. This Pogo box is now a video server running couch potato, miniDLNA and few other gems. Since I re-purposed this box I have to raise the rating.Works great. BUT doing this removes the ability to use with Pogo online cloud, which is fine for me.4Kinda working for meThis device is discontinued for a reason. I wish I had known before I purchased it. Right now it is useless to me. I bought two pogoplug mobiles and connected usb 2.0 external hard drives. Both worked for a couple of days and then they went offline and haven't worked since.Update 10/29/16: I did find some information online at jpelectron.com that allowed the pogoplugs to sort of work again. I did not lose any data and I am now able to run the free pogoplug backup software on my win10 and imac computers and on my iphone to archive files on the usb drive attached to the pogoplug. I am still trying to get the file sharing working. Increasing it from 1 to 2 stars.2LOVE IT!Bought two. One for hacking one for running regular Pogo Software. In default mode, I have my hard drive plugged in and running it regular style. I backup my iphone to it and it's GREAT! It's so cheap, I bought another one and hacked it to run Linux. Have it running as an FTP server and Plex media server. Look that stuff up! It's worth the hassle to have your own cloud/media server thing. LOVE MINE.5it doesn t work anymore sorry about that not your faultPogo plug back up. This company about a year ago sent me an email. No longer in business they do not support this unit anymore. This includes the app is not supported anymore as well. I have quite a few clients at the time that were using it and it did work but they all stopped at the same time we all got email saying no longer supported.1Quick Setup but unreliableI disconnected the Pogoplug Mobile from my system. Pogoplug Backup, for me anyway, has proved unreliable. A couple of days ago, and after performing as advertised for some days, Pogoplug Backup detached the hard drive and then, once the hard drive was reconnected, started backing up files that I had disabled via the "Stop" option. This is not the first time I have experienced the hard drive detachment issue. Coincidentally with the start of the heretofore disabled My Photos, My Videos, and My Music backups; my desktop's performance slowed to a crawl. I attribute the performance problem to the unplanned start of those 3 backups. Simplicity is nice and I do not quarrel with Pogoplug's claim of a sixty second setup. However, configuration is a issue. There are four default backups which cannot be modified and they are: My Documents, My Photos, My Videos and My Music. The user can add others, but is stuck with those four. My Windows XP machine's "My Documents" directory includes Music and Photos. So starting the "My Music" and "My Photos" backups is unnecessary. Furthermore, I only need periodic backups of "My Videos". Enabling these three backups is a waste of storage capacity for me. There are "Start/Stop" options but, as I have learned, the user cannot trust the STOP option. In a prior work life, I provided network and PC support for small and medium sized companies and would have recommended against any attempt to include the Pogoplug device in the system. Based on my experience, the Pogoplug would demand too much support time. I tried re-purposing the device and discovered that my particular model did not possess the outputs needed. I have since pulled the device, placed it in a box, and donated it to our local thrift shop.2WASTE OF TIMEDO NOT INSTALL THE SOFTWARE ON YOUR MAC.I made the error of installing the pogo software on my mac and it would not boot. I had to go to safe mode (shift key held), remove all POGO applications in the applications folder, reboot, then remove the start-up items. This machine cannot go to SSH mode without soldering usb to ttl conversion cable on to PCB. Then you can install via the console. What a mess pogo has made of this machine. Cloud support ended 11/30/16. Device cannot phone home (light is red). Tech support is non-existent. WASTE OF TIME!1This is worthless as a file backup device, but you can re-purpose it for other usesThe entire pogo plug backup system is workless and unreliable. Just read the comments on Pogoplug's own web forum. There is nothing but questions like "when is this going to be fixed" and the like. But the good news is that this little box runs Linux and it is the cheapest Linux computer you can buy. You can repurpose the box as a very light weight server for all kinds for uses. It uses the ARM CPU and I've re-flashed it with a different Linux distribution. I paid $18 for the box and I think got a fair deal.Just don't buy this for it's intended purpose1No shell access anymore, hence no easy way to upgrade OS to Debian, Arch or OpenWRT anymoreI use 7 pogoplugs for different tasks at 5 different locations. With $7-10 price tag it is a real bargain! The legacy OS is trash, I installed ArchLinux and/or OpenWRT on all my pogoplugs. The installation of ArchLinux or Debian is quite straightforward and there are good step-by-step instructions on the web. OpenWRT installation is a little bit more time consuming. It is important that the replacement of legacy OS requires shell access to this unit.Unfortunately, Pogoplug apparently removed shell access to these units early fall 2016, making software-only upgrade impossible. Now it requires opening the case and some soldering skills to get access to console. This is too mach hassle for me. I would not recommend to buy any new pogoplug anymore.2Definitely Not for me, Not an alternative to Cloud storageBottom Line, I was very disappointed.I had purchased this in hopes that I could save money from traditional cloud. Why do I use traditional cloud? So that I can update data anywhere and access anywhere. Also, any physical computer (desktop or laptop) that I chose, could become physical backups to the cloud. For me the cloud is the primary storage and my physical storage is my back-up. Pogoplug Backup and Sharing positions itself as a possible solution to worrisome security issues of handing your data to Google, OneDrive, Box, DropBox, etc., but actually, it is just a backup drive, and a poor one at that.I have a close friend who feels that Pogoplug deserves high rating, because it suits his needs, and I bought it on his recommendations, but I can't agree with him on this one. Sorry. The user interface is clunky, I really don't like "Media Settings" menu process which seems especially difficult.I am returning to Amazon2
