Customer Reviews

Mixed Bag Here I have always been happy with Patriot USB products.I was happy with the compact nature of this product and I got a very good price for this 32GB USB flash drive. However, over time, this USB flash drive became separated from the metal clip that attached to my lanyard.I remember reading a review comment about this problem when I was researching this purchase. But I thought the guy must have been rough with the product. But it happened to me and Im not rough with my flash drives.I was able to "jerry rig" it back together. But I now worry about it separating. So just be careful with this product 3If it's as tough and fast as my other Patriot drives The 3 Patriot drives I have aren't the absolute fastest ... but they are at least as fast as most, tough (ran over one with my SUV, then it baked on blacktop for six hours with the ambient temp at 110 - the blacktop was probably 160 or so. Had to tug the plug just a bit to straighten it and it worked - and continues working to this day, three years later. I'm impressed.)I haven't run over this mini-32GB unit yet, but it seems to be as quick as any (I don't put the drives on a test bench - I just count whether they copy a 4- or 5-GB file before I get back with more coffee. It passes that test nicely.) And I carry it on my key ring which gets bounced around a lot - it just keeps on working, the size is great - really handy - and the price is nice.I held back one star because to so many people - especially geeks - a 32GB drive that won't fill up in 10 seconds or less is some kind of prehistoric dinosaur. For my personal needs ... it's 5 Stars all the way. 432 GB size is stable, no 'write-protected' problem It seems as if 64 GB pendrives share an instability problem, going by the reviews I've read for different brands (Transcend, SanDisk, Kingston). Some of those reviews are here on the Patriot Axle. But I've been using Axle 32 GB drives for awhile now, and they don't have those problems. So I'm sticking with that size. What distinguishes this pendrive, is its compactness. The usual good pen drive either has a cap you'll lose, or is retractable. The retractable type is a problem, for the slider gets stuck. Sometimes in the middle of a copy, if the slider isn't exactly rightly locked, the copying won't work. So I prefer non-retractable pen drives. Of them, only the Axle is capless, yet sturdy. It's especially good at plugging into a laptop or netbook, small so to leave space for the larger USB pendrives, like Kingston. So I'm buying more Axle 32's, to go with the three I already have. I use them to make Linux on a stick; I use Linux to rescue Windows from crashes, or to do stuff Windows is otherwise incapable of doing. You don't have to install Linux on a hard drive or use a CD, to make it work as if a separate computer of its own.BTW: the GB size of pen drives isn't actually correct. They call 32 GB based on 1000=kilobyte, when in fact it's 1024. Windows can't even read all of that, so shows a smaller amount (e.g., about 29GB on a 32GB stick). Finally, space is allocated to identify the stick, which shrinks its available size even smaller. 5It should've came with a warning! Can be used as a LINUX bootable disk, BUT IT IS VERRRY SLOOOWW This is an extremely inexpensive and extremely slow device for reads and writes using any operating system.LINUX nor MAC OSX seems to improve the performance over different versions of Windows, it operates as USB 2.0 speeds and is small and sturdy but just unusable unless you plan to walk away from it after initiating file copies. The slow drive seems to slow down Windows and LINUX, it creates a noticeable lag that creates frustration.Plan to have screen wipes to clean off the profanity created saliva from your screen and keyboard.Endust for Electronics LCD & Plasma Pop Up Wipes 70 CT 11506Some are suggesting counterfeit manufacturers have flooded the market with poorly performing fakes, but that is more common with newly released and expensive USB drives and seems unlikely for a drive as inexpensive as this and purchased from Amazon instead of a Marketplace seller.Even Patriot's own TechSupport forums confirm the Axle's poor performance, search for " AXLE 16GB USB FLASH DRIVE - write speed is SLOW" go directly to the support thread. Amazon prevents the insertion of URL's so Google is necessary to reference the manufacturers shamelessly official position. 1Compact, reliable, but a little slow. Just as everyone says, since this capacity is higher than usual, speeds may be a crucial thing to some of us. This, like many other "flash" drives on the market, are somewhat slow. I notice thing on average loads about 5 megabytes a second. for FAST loading of files of instant gratification, this won't satisfy your needs.I use this for DJing on my laptop, loading the tracks from this thumb drive. Every now and then there would be a lag when trying to pull up tracks quickly, which is a little annoying, but only a matter of seconds. (those seconds can be crucial mind you)For the most part, it's pretty solid. I'm currently looking for another stick that may be faster, but it looks like it's slim pickns out there unless you want to bump up to 2.5" hard drive status, but thats a bit bulky. 4Reliable I am a computer/network technician and I used this gem for a year. This USB drive held all my diagnostic equipment. Ran Offline updates and transferred quite a bit of files. To say the least it went through some abuse. I never "ejected" it and I was always in a hurry. Used it on many machines and here I am a year later saying that it has been the best USB drive I have ever used other than the corsair survivor series. My main likes are its dependable, the capless design, quality of material and the fact that the cover is metal.Edit: I found from looking at the negative reviews that there was a Axle Repair Tool from Patriot. I downloaded this tool and ran it. My USB drive has come back from the dead to continue working. :) 5Serves the Purpose I bought this little guy to extend the storage capacity of my tablet (thanks to an OTG cable!).It worked perfectly. Transfer rates were decent enough but what I really like is the form factor. It's compact but not so small that you can't easily handle it. It's not too big either. It's about 1 1/4 inches long when the cover is in place. What's also nice is that you only need to rotate the cover about 1/4 turn to get it out of the way to plug it into a laptop. That means that the device only sticks "out" from the laptop a little over 1/2 inch while the cover remains parallel to the laptop (1/4 turn open). Not sure if I described it right but anyway it's a really nice form factor.Bottom line: Works perfectly in both form and function. Would buy again without hesitation. 5Patriot Flash Drives Problematic I have small flash drives from Patriot, Kingston, Verbatim, Transcend and Corsair. Of all these brands, my Patriot flash drives (this 32 GB Axle red flash drive and even smaller gray Patriot 32GB Flex drive) have been the most problematic. I mainly use the drives for copying fairly large files (video files for example) for use on other devices (such as a media player connected to the TV). The Patriot drives (this one and the Flex) are subject to frequent errors when large files are copied ("Error: unable to splice file" for example) that invalidate the copy. In addition, both of them have occasionally not been able to mount on a computer or other device and have had to be reformatted (repartitioned and a FAT filesystem created). Finally, after less than a month of medium (not heavy) use, this red Patriot 32GB Axle drive now cannot be written to; it's seen as a read-only device by the computer, which means files can't be copied onto it and more importantly, it can't be erased or reformatted. This makes the drive useless. My other Patriot flash drive (the 32GB gray Flex) still works but causes errors, and occasionally must be reformatted when it cannot be read nor mounted by a computer or other device. The problems that I've experienced with both my Patriot drives have not occurred with the other brands of flash drives I use (Transcend, Corsair, Kingston, Verbatim). 2Perfunctory, reliable, but not a speed demon - priced fairly It's not a speed demon but for the price (64GB under 40 dollars) as of Feb 2014 - it works.I decided to back up years of family photos and videos off site. Ya never know when disaster might strike. I have no faith in the "cloud". I also burned DVD's but wanted a single point of backup too. Eventually I'll get a DL blue ray burner but this will do for now.By the way, I bought this particular drive (early Feb 2014) after reading numerous reviews and finding the sweet spot of lowest price AFTER THE CONSIDERATION OF ** reliability **. All USB flash drives can have problems - even different models within the same brand. The reviews I found on Amazon seemed to show particular drive one having less than it's share of problems at a reasonable price. I didn't need to go broke to archive rarely viewed photos. For my purposes - (rarely updated backups) speed was not a primary concern. If you wanted something faster, and reliable, consider the Kingston, Patriot or Corsair USB 3.0 drives WITH GOOD REVIEWS.... but, right now (Feb 2014) they cost around 2X as much as this. 4Amazing I purchased this USB flash drive because it caught my eye. Not only in its low price but because it swivels so there is no cap to lose. I also like the way it feels in my hand. It is very well made and compact. I love the size, the color and the performance. I've gotten several compliments on it. I have had this Patriot for over a 18 months and it still works flawlessly. I keep all my homework on this drive and it has never failed. I use this flash drive daily and it looks and works like it did the day i got it. I liked it so much I ordered another. I would definitely recommend this flash drive to my friends and family. 5
