Customer Reviews

Panasonic Lumix GH5 a real workhorseThis power house of a camera is everything I expected to be and more. Even though I'm in the learning curve area for all the built capability, I've managed to capture some nice images and am very happy with the results achieved so far. The pictures posted as part of this review is an image captured in the Hill Country of Central Texas.5FantasticFansatic camera. There is just so much to say about the GH5. its no wonder is one of the most wanted cameras for vloggers and beginning filmmakers! the low light of this camera, coupled with a 1.4 or a 1.7 lens is definitely usable! the IBIS is on a whole new level of smoothness, and if paired with lens stabilization, its almost like using a gimbal! this camera is fantastic and can even shoot 6K video with anamorphic mode! but be careful, not all computers are fast enough to edit that kind of video. if you are a mid-high level filmography or just a vlogger on youtube who wants to spend money to make amazing video shoots, this is definitely the camera to buy!5Best Camera Under $2KPros:-4k 60p-1080 180p-10-bit 4:2:2-2 SD slots-In Body Image Stabilization-20 MP Sensor-Under $2k-High FPS Photos-6k photo (30fps 18 MP photo burst)-4k photo (60 fps 8 MP photo burst)-Great Ergonomics-Great Battery Life-Compact (though slightly bigger than the GH4)-Fully Articulating Touch Screen-Massive Lens Selection (Lumix, Olympus, and Adapted Lens)Cons:-Not Great in Low-Light (though improved over the GH4)-Needs Additional Accessories To Be Used in Professional Setting (i.e. XLR Expansion, Shoulder Rig, Follow Focus, External Monitor, Shotgun Mic, etc.)-Log Profile must be purchased separately. This is an amazing little package that can give cameras 4 times more expensive a run for their money. The Lumix DC-GH5 is blurring the lines between prosumer and professional with features like 4k at 60p, 10-bit 4:2:2 recorded internally, plus many more. Future firmware updates will blur those lines even further with a 400Mbp/s bit rate codec! This is an exciting camera that will give you stunning photos and videos (admittedly more on the video side). A must own for the aspiring photographer/filmmaker on a budget.5Camera is awesome but BUYER BEWARE!!!Love this camera. The stabilization has changed the way I film weddings. It's a thing of beauty to use a 70-200mm lens on a monopod for wedding toasts. The dual card slots is great to have. As one card runs out it switches to the next. I haven't played with the variable frame rate for slow mo video or the 4:2:2 but this is the most excited I've been to get a camera since I first got my GH1 all the years back. So how can I rate this so high with my title? Well my warning is not a defect of the camera but rather the sellers on Amazon. You see I ordered four Gh5's through Amazon. It explicitly states the USA version. The problem was of those four that I ordered only one was the USA version. The other's were the UK, Canada and Australia. Normally I couldn't care less. They are basically the same camera except for one big difference. If you look at your manual the non us versions state that the warranty is only valid in those other countries. Basically meaning those versions have no warranty in the U.S.Once again, love the camera but CHECK YOUR MANUAL! Look on the second page of the manual for what country your camera is intended for or in the manual contents for what region the limited warranty is good for. Based on my experience you have a pretty good shot of getting a non-US version with absolutely no warranty and if you don't check now you might not realize this until it's too late.54K Color Video Powerhouse!Almost perfect, the best 4K color depth video camera (prosumer) BUT for the autofocus problems in keeping the main subject in focus. Firmware update to support 4:2:2 in 10bit color is slow and unavailable as of August 2017. Recommend gimble stabilizer even with a LUMIX IS lens.4Professional Videographer - Love this cameraThis camera is a powerhouse for the price. Full disclosure, my first camera was a Panasonic SD camcorder back in 2005, then switched to a Canon Pro camcorder in 2009, then jumped on the Panasonic train again with the GH3 and was using them until I picked up the GH5.The image is amazing, but that's not news. What is news - and hopefully will not be overlooked - is how much this camera is amazing to use. Custom buttons. Focus peaking (so amazing when shooting at f1.4 to f0.95 when you're changing focus during a shot). Image stabilization (I shot my last wedding 90% handheld with non IS lenses and the footage is gorgeous.) This camera fixes all the frustrations I had with the GH3 (which really were lack of stabilization and lack of focus peaking) and upgrades the image amazingly. With weddings I typically don't even mess with 400mbps, I usually go 150mbps 60p or 24p depending on if I want to slow it down or not, and it's phenomenal.Coming from the GH3 and Camcorders - the GH5's low light makes me so happy. It isn't legendary compared to other cameras - so I've heard. But I briefly owned an A6500 and used it in low light situations and it fell apart worse than the GH5 does in similar circumstances. (wedding receptions I'm lookin' at you). For commercial work I'll crank up the bit rate and color depth and it's awesome. This is such a fun camera to use. I love the freedom I had with camcorders to hand-hold and not be tethered to a tripod or monopod for long periods. I still use those tools as I need to, but not always needing them allows me to be much faster and much less conspicuous at weddings (people think I'm a photographer and don't worry about what they're doing as much). The stabilization is better than the A6500's as well. I took that to comic-con last year and didn't love the IBIS.All to say, as a professional in the wedding and web commercial industries, this is a powerhouse of a camera. Pair it with either a speedbooster and fast glass, or voigtlander 0.95 primes and you're set to create beautiful imagery without the camera getting in the way. (No overheating or other issues that competitors deal with).5This is a beast! It's great for photos, video, and has cool features I never knew were possible. The post focus is a really rad feature. The high frame rate capabilites and the uncompressed video is the best thing about this camera though. It performs very well, very quiet, fast, great autofocus when you want it, cool touch screen, and a great feel in your hands.I've used it for interviews, professional photoshoots, studio work, and music videos and it has yet to disappoint. Many people ask what gear I use and have even bought one for themselves after hearing about this and seeing the final products!Highly recommend if you can scoop out the dough. Best all around for the money (don't forget the cost of lenses though and an extra battery if you use it a lot with the LCD - don't get Wasabi batteries, they are TERRIBLE).5A camcorder won't give you the look a DSLR can with a nice depth of fieldThe big thing this camera does that no other DSLR manufacturer seems willing to do is to allow unlimited continuous video recording. Anyone who shoots long form video (like a video podcast, discussion, interviews, etc) would either need to get a camcorder or deal with stopping recording every 30 minutes or so and then start recording again. Even an external recorder (Shogun for example) doesn't work because most DSLRs live view screen will shut off after 30 minutes of inactivity (like when you're recording a long video but the external recorder is doing the recording and the camera is actually sitting idle). Even a Canon with Magic Lantern can't get around this with it's feature to auto turn recording back on at the 30 minute mark, it takes a few seconds and there will be a gap. A camcorder won't give you the look a DSLR can with a nice depth of field. So for all those Youtubers who need long form recording, this is the camera for you, plus it doesn't overheat like quite a few DSLRs do. Only downside is the HUGE file sizes, even on the lowest 1080P settings, you're looking at close to 1GB a minute (depending on what you're shooting, I average 750MB a minute). Can't imagine what 4K is like. Which is why another great feature it has is dual SD card slots. You can mirror them for redundancy or when one fills up, it starts recording on the other, doubling your recording time. It even allows for photos on one card and video on the other to help with file management. The stills part of this camera are underwhelming but serviceable. Low light performance isn't great and high ISOs introduce lots of grain. But in good lighting, the 6K burst shot is pretty amazing in the right situations, and time lapse features are great. Focus racking is pretty cool too, but that's mainly for video but can come in handy for still images too.Overall, if you do video with longer takes (streams etc), this is the only DSLR option for you.4A powerhouse for videoI can't really add anything that hasn't already been covered extensively by other reviewers, but I'll just say that as my first "real" camera, this thing blows me away. I'm still a relative beginner when it comes to shooting video, but this camera's feature set was just too attractive to pass up. It really is a powerhouse, packed full of features that are geared towards giving me the tools that I need to shoot excellent looking video. Being able to play with 4K video, 10-bit depth video and color grading, high frame rates, external monitoring, on-screen histogram and zebras, remote control of camera functions via a phone, tablet, or PC...it's just been a pleasure to learn about this camera and its capabilities.5The GH5 is simply the best camera for so many reasons! After owning this camera for almost 2 years now and filming many wildlife documentaries and video productions on it, I can confidently say that this is the best camera I have ever used for so many reasons. I am exceptionally happy with purchasing the Panasonic GH5 and I often think abotu buying another one as a B Camera because it is such a versatile and user-friendly camera. I use my GH5 with a 12mm Rokinon and Panasonic 100-300mm and I never feel like I need any extra lenses as you can always punch in to 4K with crop which acts like a zoom extension for my 12mm when I want a tighter shot.I would highly recommend this camera for small to medium video productions. Its an amazing tool for visual storytellers!5
