Seemed to have worked, but instructions are servierly lackingBought this to check my power supply on an old server I am running that just died on me. I figured for $16 it was worth getting this instead of trial and error on replacing parts. Never used one of these before, so I wasn't sure what the results should be. On the package it says it includes; Power Supply Tester, User Manual. If they call the 3 lines on the back of the package called "The methods of operation" a user manual, they lose a star. But a quick on-line search brings up a video of someone using one, so I was able to figure out what it should do pretty easily. (step B says, and I quote "Power on the supply of power, will hear "DuDu" ring, if no flicker then the power supply output voltage is normal"). Overall it seems to have worked, so I can't take away another star. (have a PSU on order, so I am still not positive that is the problem, but tried it on a couple of old PCs I had laying around and it did seem to bring back the proper results for a working PSU).4Nice device, better than expected.This is a nice little device and it works as advertised. Used it to check out a Corsair CX430M, 24pin and CPU 4 pin connectors. The case appears to be aluminum, the plastic connectors are solid, the LED digits and lights were clear, no issues what so ever. It works off the external power of your PSU, no batteries required. For the money it's a good deal and perfect for quick measurements. It beeps if the power it expects to see isn't there or out of spec. No on or off switches, if your not connecting the 20/24 connector, you have to jump out two pins using the paper clip trick or the PSU won't turn on.5Good ATX power supply testerI bought something like this years ago before computer power supplies had SATA connectors or PCI-E power connectors, so it was time for an update. But, in addition to adding the extra connectors, this power supply tester also has a backlit LCD to show actual measured voltages instead of just LEDs to show that a voltage rail was present. So, this opens up even better at-a-glance diagnostics, where we can quickly check not only is the power supply operating, but is it outputting correct voltages. The LCD only seems to display voltages from the main motherboard connector, and auxiliary PCI-E style connector, not the SATA, or older IDE/Floppy connectors. For those, it only turns on the corresponding LED, which means this is really only useful for testing ATX power supplies (not a general purpose tester). I also wish there was a way to turn off the beeper that indicates a low/missing voltage.4Optimal Shop 20/24 4/6/8 PIN 1.8" LCD Computer...Works as it should and helped me narrow down a recent build as not related to the problem I was having. On the 20+4 pin PSU, you apparently don't need to connect the other 4 or separate connector, for it to give a reading that makes a 24 pin.The 4 pin section needs to be connected first.:P Edit: been awhile since I used this tester but I recall the 6+2 connector overloads or shorts the PSU. I haven't found this problem covered anywhere as yet. My current readings are the opposite from what they should be. -12 is 12 and the 12+ is 11.8 Alarms don't go off and the one chart on line suggests this is still within specs. One review says to plug these in with the power off and then switch it on. This might be why it trips the internal breaker? on the psu. But only one at a time other than the 24+.4you really need this if you have a lot of power supplies lying aroundAfter I blew all my Hard Disks by connecting the wrong PSU connectors (it's easier to do than you think), I realized I really needed this. I have a few PSUs - they keep making the Graphic card bigger and bigger and the AMD Ryzen processors are really about 8 processors rolled into one chip, so I kept buying new PSUs, and then when I decided to re-use the old ones found out the hard way that PSUs do not have standard wiring configurations.4How It WorksI am an electrical engineer and needed a simple tester. The unit came with inadequate instructions so I proceeded to dissemble it to learn how it works. The floppy, Molex, and SATA connectors are routed to the three LEDs. The LEDs begin to light at about 1.8 V which is typical. If an LED lights, it only means there is at least +1.8 V present with respect to the ground pin. Do not rely on the LED as an accurate voltage measurement.When connection is made to the 20/24 pin connector, two beeps will be heard and the LCD display will become active showing various voltages and (I think) the time it took the power supply to become active in ms. If no connection is made to the 4P, 6P, or 8P connectors, then the +12V2 display will flash "L.L" and the unit will beep about once a second. When connection is made to the 4P/6P/8P connector, the +12V2 voltage will be displayed and the beeping will cease.Measured verses indicated voltages: -12V -11.45/11.8, +12V2 +12.28/12.3, 5VSB +4.86/5.1, PG ?/300, +5V +5.04/5.0, +12V1 +12.28/12.3, +3.3V +3.33/3.3.It is a useful tester. Would have been better if circuitry were included to insure LEDs only lighted at predetermined voltages.4Not enough for meI'd much rather have the ability to test stand-alone (as it does out of the box - disconnect the power supply, hook it up to this tester) and under load (which can't be done out of the box - no cables) while powering the motherboard and peripherals.Cables would also be nice in the event the PC had excess cabling tie-wrapped to the frame of the case, a practice I usually follow when I build a system. I didn't relish the idea of losing that cable organization - it would take some magnitude of more time to put it back together than to run the test.3Surprise! It's not junk!I'm a stickler for build quality, and for less than $20, I don't feel ripped off at all. It's made with a one-piece aluminum body, and it doesn't give you that bottom-dollar cheap Chinese feel you get with a lot of cheap electronics like this. I've been in IT for 19 years now, and it's actually something that if I saw in person, I would still buy. In action, it works as expected. I plugged and unplugged in various connectors while it was on, and it had no problem accomodating/adapting to the inputs changing status (connected/not connected). Easy to read backlit display. Connector sockets aren't cheap and wobbly feeling. Actually a good part. It's got sockets for all the connectors I could think of. Would definitely recommend.5The clearest review of the power supply tester.This is actually a very good power supply tester unit. The key to getting the most out of it depends on a users understanding of it, which I will be explaining in this review.Find a place where you can set it up to hook up your connectors both the 20/24 pin and the 8 pin connector and leave it there still, while you turn your PSU's on and off switch. I mention this because holding it or moving around the power supply tester will give you incorrect readings.Next, something else that I haven't seen mentioned in the reviews is you turn off your PSU and then hook up your next connector, whether it be the SATA, Molex, 4-6-8 pin connectors, etc. The connectors weren't meant to be "hot-swapped" so always turn your power supply tester off before going to your next plug.The PG rating means "power good" and it needs to be between 100 ms to 500 ms. If you are getting a 0 ms, that particular plug is dead and you can't use it anymore.The LL value means the voltage is too low and HH means the value is too high. You'll also get a buzzing sound with either a PG - 0 ms, LL, HH rating, so pay attention. This indicates the voltage is out of tolerance for a peripheral and you aren't getting any power at all, aren't getting enough voltage or are getting too much and could be frying your equipment, respectively.The tolerance range is ideally +/-5% (+/-10% for the -12v rail) of what the voltage is supposed to be giving, but here are the max ranges I've found, so if your number isn't in this range you now know what to do with your PSU.+12v - 12.5v+5v - 5.3v+3.3v - 3.5v-12v - 13.2vYou can indeed test this unit under a load, but you have to take a paper clip and you'll need to connect it to your main 20/24 pin connector. Connect as many peripherals as you can and look for the PWR_ON green wire on the 20/24 pin connector and connect one end of a paper clip here and the other to a black ground wire. This starts the PSU with everything running.That's it, folks, a review that clearly explains how to use this tester.Have a good day.5Excellent Tool. easy to use.I misplaced my other one, so I bought it again. great unit.Note: plug in the 24 pin cable first. Keep it connected while testing the other 4/6/8 pin, SATA and Molex connections. You WILL get a flashing LL on the +12V2 unless a 4/6/8 pin, SATA or Molex connector is plugged in. The voltage displayed on the +12V2 is the 12 volt wire of that connector.Some of the YouTube reviewers of this product are clueless to the proper use of this well designed tool.5
