Customer Reviews

Great purchaseThis is notably one of the best purchases I have made as a ham radio operator. I am constantly amazed by what this thing will pick up. I quickly ditched the antennas that come with it. I picked up a 50' piece of speaker wire, pulled it apart, strung it up as a makeshift inverted V and used the balun that came with the unit. From Montana, I was picking up ham radio conversations from Hawaii to Germany. The HamItUp converter is an absolute must to get with this SDR. Without it, it will only go down to 50MHz and all the really cool stuff happens far below that. In the near future I will be putting together a much better antenna set up, with a better balun and we'll see how far that takes me.5Mixed emotionsDoes not come with any instructions as to which antenna is used for which frequency. For a newbie like me it would be real helpful as Ive been searching the internet for info and have had very little success. Dont rely on YouTube for this specfic item as there is little out there. I sit here for hours trying to tune in to signals and can only pick up air traffic controllers once in awhile. I am able to pull in music radio stations that I normally cant from the car. I had high hopes for this but it did not live up to my expectations. Ill continue to play with it in hopes of learning more about it.3A lot of fun for the money! This is a great starter kit. The first receiver dongle was intermittent, which resulted in a replacement being sent quickly. Since then, I bought a second RTL-SDR dongle. And neither the replacement or new one has given me the first problem. I'm buying a second up converter shortly.Be sure you install the driver EXACTLY as instructed.NOTE ON SPURS: Not all SDR software allows this receiver to perform at its peak. Too many programs run AGC much too high - it makes things seem more sensitive, but this causes overloading, and stations showing up everywhere. Receive quality almost rivals some of my "Big Name" ham radio gear under many circumstances.....rivals, but not exceeding....I use the SDR receiver on a laptop with Windows 10, as well as a Motorola Z2 Play and Samsung Tab 4 via OTG adapter cables so the dongle can receive power from a LiION battery which powers the up converter as well. The dongle will definitely get quite warm, this is completely normal!5So far works greatAfter a few installation mistakes on my part this product is working great. If using HDSdr which was my prefered software make very sure you manually copy the library file or . Dll to your HDsdr folder. Won't work without it. Also remember if using the upconverter to set your offset to 1.25M. Acts really weird if you don't.I emailed NooElec about the fact nothing worked. Received a very speedy and detailed reply as to what to try. All things mentioned fixed my problem. Very good customer support. I am very happy with this company.5I replaced it with another product after a couple of daysThese software defined radio dongles are thankfully inexpensive ,although the package I bought added a bit to the cost. Everything about the package was average with the antennas giving poor reception on every band I tried. Even standard FM reception was very poor. I tried an old mobile ham dual band antenna which made things MUCH better. My main gripe is getting the thing to work at all, because of the software. I thought I followed the directions on the website, but after installing the USB driver and the software, starting the software and hitting play (which should start things processing) nothing.Following a long series of attempting to re-install the software and install other software. It started to work. In 2019 for a commercial product using up to date Windows 10 totally unacceptable and I gave up. I bought another dongle from a different vendor and It worked the first time following their installation instructions.I took the device to work with me and asked one of my coworkers (our server and network manager) to try it on his PC. He installed it exactly per the instructions with the same results a nonworking system. I was going to give him the dongle if it worked, but he said it wasn't worth the time to try and make it work.2Good in general, no power cord includedI am pleased with the purchase. However, the kit does not include the necessary usb a to usb b cord required to power the upconverter, so have one on hand already or purchase one separately.3Not good for sdr beginnersWhen buying something like this you have to know what software exactly you are going to want to run, then install that software and see if this device is one that is supported. It really doesn't work to just go on a whim and buy it and then find out there is no way on earth to get that software you want to work to use it. The company does virtually nothing to make it any easier. They could get customers info about configuring software. The different programs are radically different. So the upconverter offset is -125000000 in one and 125000000 in another. And no one is going to tell you which way it goes or the name of the field. So I hope you want to watch endless you tube videos looking for hints because this vendor can't be bothered helping customers with configuration. Here's a hint: the only way cubicsdr is going to work with this is if you find the pothosSDR distribution with cubicsdr. On its own, cubicsdr does not have a driver for it. A huge disappointment for me is the difficulty and/or impossibility of getting some well known digital programs to use this like wsjtx and fldigi. Certainly they don't suppport this without some huge hacks. If you want to watch dozens of videos and search the web for hours on end to try to get this working then this is the device combo for you. If you want something a lot more a sure thing, keep looking.2After ordering a second one, it seems to work.new commentAfter ordering a second one of just the doggle, it works and much of my frustration has passed, just need to learn the HDSDR program to get full use of the bundle. I'll admit I was having a very bad few days when this first came in and my patience was very thin. The seller actually did offer up some support, with me spending time learning for myself to get it installed and going. Now if they will send me a replacement for the non-working first I will be satisfied to have a spare or one to use another way. I would love to use it with a tablet as just a radio in the vhf, uhf areas.Old comment Absolutely no way to find out how this thing comes to work. Installed drivers, several softwares, yet never could figure how it comes to work. Very poor support page (after installing drivers) you are on your own and if unfamiliar then no way to use it.In fairness to the supplier they did answer my email, but seemingly only to defend their support. I did answer them giving a detailed description of my experience. So far no suggestions as to how to make it work. I did watch a couple of youtube videos showing how to install the drivers and the software HDSDR I want to use doing exactly the same thing (more than once) theirs worked mine didn't.W10 sees the device, acknowledges the install, the software runs but doesn't see the device.4Capabilities and specs only available on conventional receivers with way higher price tags. The build quality and finish is clean and professional, conveying confidence in the product. Installation and set-up (including software installation on a mac) was straightforward, problem-free and quick. There is a fairly comprehensive set of accessories included in the kit, though the user will need a USB cable to power the 'Ham it Up' module. It is also a good idea to get a short USB patch cable to avoid plugging the 'NESDR Smart' unit directly in to a USB socket (the USB-A to USB-C / thunderbolt 3 converter for a MacBook Pro is just the job). This reduces mechanical loads on the connection - the module is compact but quite heavy. The cubicSDR software is almost intuitive to run and the features that it provides (especially the spectral displays) are powerful assets for short-wave listening. Setting up for short-wave work with the frequency offset is easy, but it might be better clarified that there is an upper limit to the frequency range:To go to the higher VHF/UHF ranges it is necessary not only to select 'passthrough', but also to set the frequency offset to zero. And finally, the provided antennas perform very well, even indoors. I find that the simple telescopic antenna performs just about as well as a 10m long wire hung outdoors.4Lots of Fun for a low low price. This is a BARGAIN! Ive had so much fun playing with this SDR. Some Caveats, follow the emailed instructions to the letter. The instructions for the driver loading software are incorrect. They say the device will show up as NE SDR.... it does not... it shows up as Bulk Device.... the instructions tell you the address of the device which does show up correctly. Once the driver was loaded I loaded the software and have had a blast with it.... no its not a Flex Radio... but it is a well built little sdr thst you can shove in your laptop bag so you have a radio with you on business trips... the Ham it upconverter is great too. One thing the description is wrong about saying NE SDR covers 100 khz to 1.7 GHz...this is incorrect. NE SDR natively covers 25 MHz to 1.7 GHz. You need to use the upconverter to receive below 25 MHz. You also need to put a -125 Mhz offset in the SDR software. Once you do you can receive HF Ham Stuff and shortwave. This is really a good deal. Highly recommended!5
