Buy the "no sandbag" version instead!$30 for a sandbag? And a crummy one at that? Sheesh. Don't buy this--buy the "no sandbag" version instead:https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014E7NEM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1The stand itself is OK. Yes, a little flimsy and you will certainly need sandbags, but it's a lot nicer to work with than a full C-stand and boom arm. For my Profoto B2 head and a lightweight modifier, it's great. The sandbag that comes with this has a hook on it and you will need your own hook or carabiner or something--the hole for the sandbag is flush with the pole and disappears into the stand's lower part. I probably would have kept the damn thing if the sandbag itself weren't so cheap. No inner liner means sand will inevitably leak. I'd recommend using pea gravel instead. Or better, buy the no-sandbag version even if you don't care about the money. Maybe Manfrotto will get the message. I love their stands--this is my 7th, I think--but I don't like being jerked around on the details. 2no packed properly and came brokenI was so disappointed that when I forked up almost $200 for a tripod it came in a box t hat was NO WHERE near the size of the tripod which resulted in broken pieces at the bottom of the box. So disappointing. Now I have to go through the obnoxious process or sending back and re-ordering. It would be great if it was just sent properly the first time. 2so I would only recommend it for light duty useThis is a very well made light duty boom! I use this for a hair light and for some back lighting depending on the situation, and it works excellently. I only use it with a small-medium soft box and a speedlight using an S-type mount and it works well for that. This setup does seem to be on the verge of it's abilities with this setup at max extension however, so I would only recommend it for light duty use. As far as the stand quality itself, this is the best stand I own as far as feel (and I have several other Manfrotto compact stands). The release and tensioning mechanisms have a really solid feel, and I love the friction bars top and bottom for moving and securing the legs into position. Both the legs and primary bar have plenty of thickness and heft to them, that I don't expect them to give out for any reason. The only weak spot on this frame is the final extension tube is fairly small and thin, and does flex some even with my light weight setup when making adjustments.I would highly recommend this for light duty use, but I'm not sure it would hold up to heavy mono-lights in a studio. I would definitely look elsewhere for any heavier lighting combos. I imagine this boom will last me for many years to come from it's build quality though! I did opt for iron weights instead of sand for various reasons including wear. If you're into portability there are some great water bladder weight options as well!note: I noticed some reviewers mentioned the adjustment handle was missing from the boom, mine did arrive with this item just fine, and everything was in the package needed for setup. 5Versatile and a good value, not perfect. This can be a good stand and I think it will work well for me. I experienced shipping issues and have no idea what is going on with quality control on this unit. The first one I ordered was missing several parts. Now comes what is great about Amazon. I entered a request for exchange and the replacement was on its way before the UPS man picked up the first one the next day. Within two days I had a replacement. Now the bad news. The second one (as with the first one) still did not include the very necessary adjustment lever that tightens the boom arm when extended. I needed to use it and was frustrated so I went to a big box store and purchased a replacement knob for a lawn mower handle and made it work. What is going on here? Two in a row with the lever missing? At least the second one had only one missing part. This is a nice stand but be prepared for some nimble adjustments to balance the counter weighting to match the light. With the Flash Point Cool Light I had to add more sand bags to balance. Tightening the adjustment lever does little more than preventing the boom from sliding. Will not hold the weight. See my photos. 3Overpriced, missing key partsI went against my better judgment and bought a brand new light stand from a top name brand company. I was excited when the stand came in time for the shoot I bought it for. But upon closer inspection, the stand came without the spigot on top! I couldn't use the stand as a result. Manfrotto did not respond to my email but I did finally get ahold of them on the phone and they are sending me the missing spigot now. Amazon did a great job reimbursing me for the spigot I bought locally so that I could use my stand. Hat's off to amazon, but thumbs down to Manfrotto for sending me a stand with no spigot. I think I'll go back to buying used locally and inspecting the products before I buy them. Now that I have used the stand a few times I think it is overpriced version of a basic boom light stand that you can get for a 1/3 of the price new on Amazon from other companies. Don't think you're getting a whole lot more for buying named brand gear. Sometimes you do, but in this case you're paying a lot for the name. 3The only stands you needThe most versatile light stand there is (besides its steel big brother Avenger). If the boom is left vertical, it's a sturdy 12'-9" light stand. With the combi boom, it gets the hair light right where it should be and off camera. I also use these as a mic booms and it's easier and faster to set up than using a c-stand and audio boom arm. Only wish it was slightly shorter collapsed as its 45 inches doesn't fit in standard 42 inch cases. 5two great tastes that taste great togetherIt's a light stand and a boom stand in one - I have no use for microphones in photography but the boom part is good for hair lights, it also is great when I use soft boxes etc. Sandbag included is quite handy and well constructed as well as the rest of unit. It's Manfrotto - they're known for quality goods and this unit is no exception. My only bad experience was in the shipping, the first time around it was rec'd in beat up shape (the box had been opened and taped back up again and the unit was completely out of its plastic sleeve) and without the brass spindle which is necessary for light use. I contacted amazon and they had to send out another unit (instead of just sending the brass spindle) which also came in pretty ratty shape (once again the box had been torn and beat up and the unit was out of its sleeve) but at least it had the spindle. 4I would only buy this if you can inspect it first.Like others my stand was shipped without the piece to tighten the boom assy. I can't believe with all the feedback they haven't figured out that something is wrong with their QA. The stand appears well made like most of the other products I own made by them. It is relatively heavy compared to my ePhoto light stands. I'm going to try to get a part from Manfrotto instead of having to ship back the whole unit to Amazon. I know Amazon would take it back but I want to use this if possible. Don't order one of these if you have a job coming up and are depending on it being usable out of the box :( I'll post an update on my success or failure getting the part from Manfrotto.9/4/2013 - I lowered my review to 1 star due to the pathetic customer service. The stand is useless without the locking lever for the boom. I emailed them and generated a ticket. Several days later I got a response that said the ticket had been resolved by giving me a phone number to call. I called this number and they said I had to deal with Amazon. Well Amazon will just refund my money (at least they have good customer service) or send me another unit which will probably also be missing parts. I won't buy any other Manfrotto products again unless I can see them in person. Oh yes and just FYI the spigot on this had dings in it where it had been tightened and loosened which tells me that this stand had probably been returned before. Wouldn't have bothered me if it came with all the parts. One last word of advice if you have been unfortunate to get a stand missing the boom nut. I bought a 5/16" bolt with a matching T-nut for around $5.00 at Ace hardware. Works like a charm. Easier than sending the boom stand back.9-12-13 - Last update, OK I moved the review back to 3 stars. I sent a nasty email to them again and the person answering said "Why didn't they just ship you the part?" Good question. Anyway he said he would personally take care of it and today I got the part. Soooo.... If you get one of these missing parts be persistent. I guess they aren't all informed about customer service. I'm now happy but wish I hadn't had to go through all this to begin with. I would have given this 4 or 5 stars if I hadn't got it defective. 3Manfroto Makes Solid Gear, This is No ExcpetionThere are plenty of brands of lighting stands and rigging on the market, but Manfroto stands out because of the quality of its construction. They make rugged stuff and this boom is no exception. The set up takes a little head scratching but it is not hard once you figure it out. All the joints are solid and the metal tubing seems to have a good heft to it.I'd make sure to put the sand or other filler you might use in the sandbag counter-weight into ziplock bags before I put them in the provided item but that is about the only additional thing you will need to get lights up and running above your subject. Aside from the weight of the bag, this item is also highly portable and wont take up much more room than a sturdy tripod in you lighting bag. This makes it great for a fixed studio or for lighting in the field. Great item by a solid accessory company. 5Great productUPDATE: 7/22/2014: After using this product for 2 years I have no complaints. Every time I go to set it up it takes seconds and is very sturdy. The product is holding up well. I just wish I could afford two more of these. :-)----------------------------------------------------First, hats off to Amazon for their customer service. I received the product on time, but it was missing some key pieces and looked like a used unit. I asked for a replacement and I promptly sent back the unit in question. Two days later the replacement arrived (nice!), in great shape and with all of the pieces. (I also then realized that the first unit was missing Manfrotto documentation, something that the second unit did have). As for the unit itself, I've used it only a couple of times, but it works like a charm. It's exactly what I wanted to complete my three-point lighting system (a relatively cheap system that I pieced together). The one negative is the counterweight bag. I don't like the way it's constructed/arranged. It seems odd to have a hook that hangs the bag vertical, but then have horizontal oriented pockets on the bag. It's not a big deal, just something I noticed. I'll likely get some small weights and stuff them in there.Overall, another great Manfrotto product. 5
