Buy a Trezor I really tried to make this thing work. Setting up a password and the "24 words" were easy. The fun began with the Google Chrome apps. Apparently, the apps are already loaded for 4 major cryptocurrencies; although, that's not stated in any of the accompanying instructions. The device appears not to work with any browser other than Chrome. The Bitcoin, Ethereum, and several other CC apps are easily (apparently) downloaded, free,, but getting them to work is another story. The only one on which I could actually tell was downloaded and functioning was the Bitcoin app. I installed and installed the Ethereum one several times and I could never get it to function. I could never trust storing CC on a device that's so unreliable and difficult to manage. Also, navigation between the various functions on the device was problematic; to return to a previous screen I had to unplug the device and enter the password. OK, part of it is that I'm not the most technologically savvy person on the planet, But, after spending hours with the Nano, I bought a Trezor wallet and it functions perfectly with several currencies. As a last resort, I emailed Ledger for help after reading all the irrelevant FAQs. Their website said it might take "several weeks" to respond, and indeed, it has been 10 days and I've heard nothing. My review talks about the Nano in the past tense because I sent it back for a refund with no questions asked by Amazon. I don't need an overpriced, difficult-to-operate device manufactured by a company whose customer "service" rivals AT&T. And, thank you Amazon! 1The build and quality of the Nano S is nice. The screen is welcoming but very limited as ... Update 10/20Very pleased with Ledger. They do listen to their customers. The new firmware 1.2 features add some of the features missing in my previous review. The addition of Litecoin is welcoming, as well as the new Ledger Manager. Token and contract support for Ethereum, and some other small additions. I would like to see Monero or Dash support in the near future but already Ledger is paving the way for a hardware wallet to have and has been the first to include multi-crypto support on a single device. Great job Ledger! Keep it up.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am a normal every day Jo, so my review of this item is my own opinion. I apologize for any grammar errors. It is a quick review and I am just winging it. The build and quality of the Nano S is nice. The screen is welcoming but very limited as far as in formations goes. The metal cover that swing open is a bit annoying as there is no way to lock it in place. It is pretty loose on there and you can bend it to have a stiffer movement, but over time it just loosens up again. The bitcoin side of the Nano S UI is super easy to use. Your typical information is displayed. However unlike the Trezor there is no way to tag descriptions on transactions. The ethereum side of the Nano S UI is very limited. Not very much information is displayed, very basic. Your are limited to one address only, a disappointment for sure.At the time of this review both apps requires a desktop/laptop to use. No mobile apps as of yet. If you want to know your balance, the only way is to connect it to the chrome app. Disappointing because it has a display and no setting to show your balance. Even the box it came in show the Ledger with a balance on the picture? The 4 digit PIN require is ok, but I prefer how Trezor does it with random pins. I think Ledger scrambled PIN could be set up like the Trezor in the near future. The FIDO security works really well for my drop box and gmail. If your going to use both nano S and the Trezor, I recommend setting up the nano S first then the Trezor. For some reason I does not work the other way round.Have said all that it does what it suppose to do. Hopefully future updates will address limitations mentioned. Currently I use the Ledger for my ETH holding and my Trezor for my BTC. Since I use my Trezor more often with bitcoin this works for my setup. Later on I throw the Nano S into a Secured Safe. It is decent and I do recommend it. 4Ledger failed to turn on I. had a Keepkey wallet but decided to. Buy a Legger Nano for my son i worked for a few weeks then stopped workingI called support they said they would sent me another one but. never trceived itSince i had some Litecoins on the bad Ledger i had to buy another Ledger for $144.00 so i could retrieve my coinsVery disappointed my problem was not resolved and i had to buy a new Ledger 1Tampering ? Product seems to have been opened before I received it with fingerprints on the display area 1Buggy right out of the box, really supports only 5 coins at a time, needs chrome I made a decision to buy hardware wallet almost a year ago. As almost everyone here I did my due diligence and ended up short-listing Trezor and Ledger as they are the two most obvious choices. I don't remember the detailed reasons at that time but I decided to go with Trezor. After using Trezor for a while I never regretted buying it - very easy to setup, good integration with Electrum, no problems whatsoever. Anyhow... why is it important? Because although I bought Trezor in the beginning I assumed that Ledger provides the same level of user experience. Unfortunately the problem with Trezor (the only one?) is that it support only a small number of cryptos. And with recent changes in the crypto space I assume many people start looking for other coins beyond the "Coinbase three". So, I ended up buying Ledger Nano S to get support for my growing portfolio of various other cryptocurrencies. This was the preamble to explain where I am coming from. My review of Ledger after 20 min of setting it up (more like writing down the recovery phrase) and using:1. Form-factor and build quality is on par with Trezor2. Setup process is generally fine, but Trezor's is more polished3. Pin-code for Ledger is only four digits long? A bit too short, but probably not a big concernNow bad parts:1. If only I knew that I have to have Chrome to use their Ledger Manager. I am on Mac, with Safari and FF, why I should keep a third browser just to run the dongle wallet? Can't you create an Electron app or something?2. OK, I get Ledger Manager and see a long list of supported coins. Cool! Let me install Ripple App to start with. "Unable to Install Application". Wow, good start. Let me read FAQ. Here is another surprise - Ledger Nano S has enough memory only for 5 apps, so although there are 20 apps in the manager they suggest you rotate them all the time. Very convenient if you just want to make one transaction.3. Fine, perhaps I have too many apps. Let me uninstall ETH for instance. "Unable to Remove Application". Really?4. Let's look at the logs - there are some messages about "old firmware", but if I open the firmware tab in Ledger Manager there is nothing there.5. They suggest me to contact support, but my gut tells me I am not going to like it (it is a speculation - I am sure they are wonderful and very responsive). So, to summarize - setup process is OK, but I found Trezor to be more polished. Support of alt coins in theory is great and to many will be the only selling point over Trezor, but you have to keep Chrome and you can only have 5 apps at any given time. My 10min experience is that it is very buggy and now the only option I have is to contact Ledger Support to assist me with brand new product... 1Great concept, but poorly implemented. After many hours trying to get it to work, I quit. The Ledger installation, installed the wrong udev rules permissions. I fixed that, and the device is seen by the computer, and the U2F works, but the Ledger Apps will not recognize the device for wallets or app manager.I don't like the fact that this device needs google products to work.A waste of money and TIME!Great concept, but poorly implemented. 1Stains on item, see photo. I heard multiple times that hard wallets should never be purchased from third party sellers because of the possibility that hard wallet integrity could be compromised by malware inserted by intermediaries. Malware that can steal crypto currency. I stupidly ignored this advice and bought my Nano from Amazon anyway. My Ledger Nano S arrived today in a shrink wrapped box (as expected). Upon opening the box I discovered stains on the metal indicating that someone had handled it sometime after manufacturing. See the attached photo so you can see what I'm describing.I feel compelled to write this review because the sole purpose of a hard wallet is to securely store crypto currency. 1Verify if Genuine, Overall Great Investment! Works as described and I also double checked to make sure this device was not tampered with by opening it up and checking to see if the MCU chip contained "042K6" according to ledger's website. Check out the high-res photos of the PCB board. So the setup process was pretty straight forward but takes a while. The chrome app works perfectly and shows all the wallets that are pre installed and the firmware came updated. I also installed a few other wallets as well and it works great. I feel a lot safer now keeping my coins in a hardware wallet rather than some exchange or wallet on my laptop.Google this below because amazon does not allow external linksHow to verify the security integrity of my Nano S 5Great wallet with constant updates. This is a really nice crypto wallet that is very easy to use. The ledger team are constantly supporting new currencies and there are a lot of good resources for crypto beginners on this wallet. There is a limit to the variety of currencies you can have on the wallet though. I believe it s 3. So this may not be for you if you are planning on storing a wide variety of coins/tokens.For those of you who don t know how it works. It stores your private keys on the device. You will receive a sequence of words when you set it up for the first time(write these down and store them somewhere safe) and you will set up a pin. To access the device you use the pin by physically inputting into the ledger. If you lose the ledger or forget your pin code you use the sequence of words that you were given when you set the device up. You can recover your wallet on the same ledger or a new ledger using those words. 5Great but LIMITED hardware wallet The wallet itself is great, easy to setup and use.. the only problem I have with it is you're only limited to using 4 cryptocurrency wallets at a time if you want to setup a fifth wallet you'll have to remove one of the other 4. for example, say you have BTC, BCH, ETH, and ZEC and you wish to setup a fifth wallet for LTC, you can't! You have to remove one of the other wallets first.. that was not listed on either Ledger or Amazon websites. 3
