MKC Missing Link OpenerIs this tool *really* necessary? No, not really. It *does* make things a whole hell of a lot easier than trying to use your hands or whatever is lying around the garage though. The $33 I paid for this thing does seem like a bit much, but I guess there isn't enough demand for them to move enough volume to allow the price to go down a little. 4Flawless operation, awesome tool!I've been using regular pliers for years on my quick-links. Finally thought what the heck I'll try these pliers (and the closers). WOW! It's like a hot knife through butter removing and installing the quick-links now. I figured they would work, but had no idea they would work so phenomenally well! These and the closer pliers are two of the best bicycle tools I've purchased and can't believe I waited so long to do so. 5Works perfectly to open KMC Missing LinkI recently began using KMC chains and the corresponding Missing Link to connect and install the chain. This tool is designed to allow the link to be opened very easily. Needle nose pliers don't work well, so don't even bother trying to use them. This tool is fairly low cost (about $12.00 when I got it) and works very well.I did not buy a "closer" tool as it's not really necessary. To close a new Missing Link I just position it on the top of the chain loop, between the rear cassette and chain rings on the crank, and hold the rear wheel from turning while pushing forward on a pedal. This is enough force to close the link. 5Where, Oh Where, Have You Been All My Life? For sale on Amazon, apparently. Connecting the KMC missing link when installing a new chain is easy, but I've always had to fiddle with it for way too long when removing the chain. In fact, when I would replace a chain, I would just use my chain tool to pop a pin out rather than mess around with the link. But during the last project (replacing derailleurs), I finally had the brilliant thought that perhaps there's a better way. And this is it. I'm a little annoyed it cost as much as it did, but with it I can remove the chain in a second or two with zero frustration. If only I could eliminate other annoyances from life for under 13 bucks... 5There is a tool for every job! This is the tool you need for properly removing a bicycle chain.Used this product for the first time today for removing my 10 speed Trek 8.5 D/S 2015 chain. EASILY pulled the links together and was able to pop the chain off in about 3 seconds. Nicely built and at this time shows no signs of rust or wear. I would expect this product to last quite a long time. 5Worked very well as expected! Not much to say, it works really well as expected. In the past, I've been able to "unlink" Sram & Vipperman master links by hand, but was unable to unlink the master link (referred to as "Missing Links" by KMC) on my KMC 11 speed chain. This tool worked perfectly. This chain plier is better than the PARK TOOL plier because it has a spring that self opens the jaws. 5Happy to finally have the right tool for the jobFor years I have messed with the tools I had at hand: chain hooks, narrow pliers, bare hands, etc. Finally bit the bullet and added another tool to the garage. No regrets - this is a timesaver and cuts frustration for those maintenance jobs I always put off.If I lost this I'd buy another right away. 5Sometimes you need the right tool for the jobAfter struggling to open my chain without tools I eventually ruined my missing link by trying needle nose pliers to open the link. I reluctantly bought the opener and closer tools (and a 6 pack of missing links). What can I say? Both the opener and closer worked perfectly. So simple but so perfect. Hopefully they will open and close enough chains over the years to justify the minor investment. 5PerfectLove this set of pliers. It's way less expensive than the Park and works perfectly. Sure, it only unlocks the Missing Links, but locking them is so easy to do either with the cranks or by hand that it really doesn't matter. Well built. Who doesn't love buying a new tool? 5One hand job.I have multiple tools in two different states. I have the Park missing link tool in storage so I had to buy another one here on the west coast. this time I chose the KMC missing link opener and I really like this one better than the Park version. The difference is the KMC has a spring and the Park does not. To use the park tool you have to manually take your two hands and spread the tool open and then stick it in the slots to compress the two halves together to release the master/missing link. After doing that you have to pry the handles apart to get the tool out. The KMC version with the spring makes this process a one hand job. Do you need one? Hey thats up to you. Riding my bike and doing the maintenance on it is my hobby. It is very rewarding when I can change cassettes, chains, bleed the brakes and change the break pads. Tools like this makes the job easier. If I can avoid the LBC to do general repairs and maintenance that I am capable of doing it myself I will. $10 is cheap for a tool that will be used multiple times in my opinion 5
