    Windows users need driver installation This adopter worked immedeately on my 2011 Macbook pro to provide USB3 connections. To make it work on W7, which is on Bootcamp, I had to install USB3 driver, which can be downloaded from Kanex site. Finding a driver on their site requires some efforts. This point is not written on the instruction sheet that came with the adopter and not on their site. So, I put 4 stars instead of 5 for lack of descriptions. The data transfer rate from SSD in the computer to external SSD connected through this adopter is found to be 200 - 250 MB/sec, which translate, 12 - 15 GB/min.External drive that connected through this adopter can not be used for boot up. Some softwares do not recognize the external drive connected through this.4/4/2017: I connected external eSATA drive today and found my macbook pro does not find the drive. 3A Solid, Well-Designed Option for Expansion There is a real dearth of Thunderbolt devices in the world, and most that DO exist have prices that are exorbitant for the everyday user. I really wanted to be able to make use of Thunderbolt, though -- it seems like an excellent expansion option for machines that may not be able to have many expansion options, such my Apple MacBook Pro MC700LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION), which both lacks USB3 and any expansion options (such as ExpressPort/34).The Kanex unit, then, is reasonably priced for what it is (essentially, USB3 and eSATA jacked directly into the PCIe bus via a built-in Thunderbolt cable). I purchased this item because, while I love my MacBook Pro, it suffers from the aforementioned lack of expansion, along with limited USB2 ports. While a USB hub is always an option, overall throughput for each port remains a limiting factor: sharing a single USB2 bus with an HD camera, HD USB microphone, external storage, and other random peripherals can be problematic and cause data bottlenecks.The KTU10 solves this by both providing a SuperSpeed USB3 bus, separate of the built-in USB2 busses, as well as eSATA. The device itself shows up as two installed PCIe cards in System Profiler (which is pretty cool, considering this is a laptop). USB3 speeds are impressive: USB3 flash drives deliver up to 5Gb/s (versus the built-in USB2's 480Mb/s), while Thunderbolt itself has a maximum throughput of 10Gb/s per channel (Thunderbolt 2 increased that to 20Gb/s on a single channel), making this the perfect solution for upgrading older machines with limited options. Additionally, hooking up a USB3 hub to this device circumvents the bandwidth issues that arise when you have multiple devices trying to share a much slower USB2 bus.Some reviewers have complained that the connecting cable is a bit short, but I have found it to be the perfect length for my uses. It allows to device to stay near the port-side of the machine, while not actually obstructing other ports. It's a solid, well-constructed peripheral, and I'm not afraid to pack it into my bag and travel with it.All in all, the KTU10 is an extremely capable product, and I wish that more Thunderbolt devices were made like this (such as one with dual USB3 ports or USB3 and FireWire 800). I doff my hat to the people at Kanex for developing a such a useful and well-designed product. 5PEICE of JUNK, doesn t even work correctly For 80 dollars this isn t worth it. Why, welL first off whenever you connect something fast like a SSD to a 2011 mac ( that has an SSD in it) it stops transferring every 5 seconds. For instance if I moved a 30 gb file it would move fast ( 500 mb per second ) but it would stop half way for 5-10 seconds then it would start up again. Another problem is that you can t run an Os over it. I tried running Mac OS high seria but when it went to the installation screen it would automatically revert back to the old boot up disk. In general, this is only good if you have a computer THAT ALREADY HAS USB 3.0, which makes his useless. Would not reccoment, just spend 80 dollars on something actually useful. 1Marginal, overpriced - ridiculous lack of forethought on cord length It works - ridiculous price though. Didn't have a choice and I am at least glad someone makes this.....I needed to add a SATA external drive, my MacBook Pro kept running out of RAM because I have a lot of animation software on it. This and an external drive - all told cost me about $400 saved me from having to buy a new laptop. The new drive was a USB-C so I had to have this to connect to my Thunderbolt port, So can't complain really. Have to laugh though, the adapter is bigger than the 3TB SATA.UPDATE: cord is RIDICULOUSLY short. Coupled with the 3TB SATA, the length is 18". I originally thought I might be able to wrap it around the back casing of the laptop screen and attached with velcro but the adapter is too short. I am soooooo not a happy camper. I have a laptop that has become a desktop - its awkward to carry because of the weight of the adapter and the SATA - afraid it might ruin the wiring in the cords. So now anytime I get up to move I have to eject them. This is really NOT acceptable. 5Small and convenient compared to my Akitio Thunderdock, but I still can't get the port replicator to work... Works great other than the fact that I can't get the port replicator function to work with a eSATA dual HDD dock (Thermaltake BlacX duet). It works fine on my old PC and both drives show up fine, but only one drive is seen my both this adapter and my Akitio Thunderdock on my new retina iMac and Late 2011 MacBook Pro (w/o native USB 3.0). Both of my Thunderbolt adapters are supposed to support port replication, so I have no idea what's going on. I rarely use the dual dock anyway, so not a deal breaker for me. Other than that, both devices work great to allow for high speed transfer using eSATA and USB 3.0 external drives.The Kanex has fewer ports, but is my preferred adapter for the MacBook Pro since it doesn't require an external power brick, is much smaller, and easier to carry in a laptop bag and use on the go.The Akitio (version 1), has double the USB 3.0 and eSATA ports, includes FireWire for connecting to older drives and video cameras, but requires a power brick, is nearly the size of a paperback book, and isn't really convenient for traveling. 4Love this Adapter-Perfect for Adding USB 3.0 to a Mac without USB 3.0. A great adapter! I'd been looking for a way to adapt my mid-2011 iMac Thunderbolt connector to support USB 3.0. After researching various docking stations, I found the Kanex KTU10. The Kanex adapter is a perfect way to add USB 3.0 to Thunderbolt enabled non-USB 3.0 Macs. The price was great and all that was needed to make it work was to plug it into a Thunderbolt port. Currently I have a Seagate Thunderbolt external drive I use for back-up and a 2nd Seagate USB 3.0 drive I use for extra storage. I also use Parallels for Mac and was able to store the PVM (Parallels Virtual Machine) on the USB 3.0 drive and boot it. Caveats: (1) The Kanex KTU10 needs to be plugged in at the end of the Thunderbolt device chain. The only Thunderbolt cable is hardwired into the adapter and there is no Thunderbolt port. (2) The Thunderbolt connecting cable is very short (3) I am using this with Mac OS X Yosemite (4) I have not tried the eSata port. (5) I bought a Kanex 4-Port USB 3.0 hub to provide more than one USB 3.0 connection. 5Did not work w/ Yosemite, Kanex never responded to support request Had some really high hopes for this device. Unfortunately, it refused to be recognized on my early-2011 MBP, running Yosemite with latest update. The manufacturer, Kanex, only provides support by submitting a form on their website. No number to call. I don't mind getting support via their site, IF they actually responded. Unfortunately, they did not after a week. If your running Yosemite, I don't recommend this product. More importantly though, I strongly do not recommend any products from Kanex due to their lack of interest in supporting their devices. 1Cost-effective solution expanding USB 3.0 from Thunderbolt I have a Mac Mini (mid 2011) and love it. Unfortunately, with the four USB 3.0 external drives I have hooked up, I wished it had USB 3.0 instead of USB 2.0. Getting a Thunderbolt drive solution was too expensive for me to consider. I was seriously considering replacing the Mac Mini with a newer model with USB 3.0. But when I saw what the Kanex Thunderbolt to eSATA plus USB 3.0 could do along with the positive reviews, I thought I'd give this product a try. On the Mac, all you do is hook one end to the Thunderbolt port and the USB 3.0 end to your USB 3.0 powered hub. What a difference! My read/write speeds improved from 33 MBs to 123 MBs! Now, depending what files get copied/transferred, the job gets done from 2 to 4 or more times faster. It is nice to have a solution offered using the Thunderbolt port. 5Added years of useful life to my aging Mac. This thing works amazingly well added USB 3.0 and eSATA support to my 27-inch, mid-2011 iMac. It's so much faster for backups now. My only suggestion is that if you're using the adapter daisy-chained through another device and things aren't going well, connect it directly to your computer. I was having occasional drive access issues through this unit, but connecting it directly to the Mac cured the problem. I have used it using USB3 with two different units of the Seagate Expansion 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEB5000100) and using eSATA with the Vantec NexStar NST-D100SU 2.5-Inch/3.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA Hard Drive Dock. 5New Life for my MacBook Pro, Early 2011 with attached Thunderbolt Display Truly plug and play - works on Mavericks without driver installation. I'm using this attached to my Thunderbolt Display with both WD MyPassport and Seagate USB3 drives. Data transfer is a lot faster than with USB2 (for example, a 90GB file takes about an hour on USB2, but it's done in 15mins using this little gadget).I bought it because I'm using a MacBook Pro 13", Early 2011 model. The hardware is good enough for what I'm doing and I don't intend to upgrade. The one limiting factor was indeed USB3 and the Kanex box solves this problem. I can even run Virtual Machines via Parallels Desktop directly from attached drives.One thing of note though, and it's a seriously minor point: the cable is not long enough for the box to lie flat on the desk when attached to the Thunderbolt Display. Instead it kind of dangles, balancing itself on a corner. It's a bit ugly if you have an eye for design, but really nothing to worry about.Another thing to keep in mind: you cannot boot from this device, Kanex make that clear on their website. It operates once the rest of OS X has loaded, but it's not available when you start your system and hence none of your attached drives will become boot drives. Just thought I'd mention it. 5
