Customer Reviews

Terrible new user interface. Terrible quality. Terrible new user interface. Didn't think they could make it worse than the old version, but they did it! I have 4 units and they all failed within 2 years. This last one failed within 3 months! Now there is this new feature they call "astro time". Perhaps Intermatic is telling us that, no matter the setting you choose, the stars will decide the time it turns the unit on or off when it feels like it? I have looked high and low on how to control and/or disable this "astro time", or even what the heck it is, but I guess only "astro events" will affect that. I wish someone will make a better unit. No wonder their price keeps coming down, down, down. I will happily pay more, more, more, if the quality and user interface is better. 1Works great! Works as advertised. For those who had trouble programming it, I would like to say they don't know how to read the instructions. For those who complained that when in battery mode the display is dim, well it's for backup only, its not expected to operate when on battery. The battery is simply to provide for a way to retain the programming. The battery should probably be replaced every year. 5Does the job nicely for indoor plant lighting I'm running this the opposite way from most posters: I want my plant lights to come on an hour before local sunrise, and go off an hour after local sunset. As a total cost/value necessity, the programming is a little like VCR programming used to be. If you want an interactive Alexa programming, you'll have to pay a lot more than this bargain price! When you are setting it up, you have to select one of three US Latitude bands. After entering the date and time, you can see the (computed) local Sunrise and Sunset. You get to ALTER those two numbers, which I did for botanical reasons. You might alter them because you live far East or West in your time zone. I only needed one "event", but you can enter up to 7 "on and off" event pairs. Events can use specific hour-minute times, or the Astronomical (... from the name of the device) Sunrise or Sunset time. I am very glad to have found this device, especially since Amazon offered me an open-box unit, on Prime! One warning: I suspect that the timer uses a Triac semiconductor to control the load. It has a different wattage rating for each type of load. For example, it's rated 1000W incandescent lights, but only 500VA (that's a quantity very similar to Watts) for electronic ballasts, like modern fluorescents. They haven't updated the instructions for today's LED lighting, so I'm using the conservative 500VA rating for my 140 Watt Hi-Bay LED lighting fixture. I would check your load rating very carefully before selecting this device for a big load, like a pump motor. (Literature says 1/2 horsepower, presumably for motors.) I would also remind you that big pumps located far from the house are likely to have huge "starting" currents. 5Good timer, not particularly easy to set up. I bought this timer for a very specific purpose. I need to be able to turn on (and off) a waterfall pump every day - but only for a very short cycle during the winter (when I don't actually want to pump much water, for other reasons). Ideally, I needed a timer that would work for motors and would allow a "duty cycle" of only a few seconds - just enough to keep our under ground, under water, pump impeller-shaft lubricated. But, I couldn't find anyone selling a consumer timer (low cost) that would do that. This timer has the ability to turn on, then off, in only one minute cycles. You can do seven such cycles - which was enough for me (one a day).It is designed for outdoor use and has battery backup (although I don't yet know how well that will work during mid-winter freeze).I only give it four stars because setting up the timing shifts is not particularly easy nor intuitive. You have to pay close attention to which buttons you are pushing at which time - or be prepared to start over. (They should study Orbit sprinkler timers which are much more intuitive to set.) 4Brilliantly Simple... IF you read the instructions. This is my second purchase of this unit. My first unit came with my koi pond equipment from Sacramento Koi.The first time I tried programming it, I was too lazy to read the instructions, and because it wasn't very intuitive, I was a little put off. When I actually took the 2 minutes required to read the 1 sheet of instructions (front and back), it was brilliantly simple. My first time programming, I brought the sheet out with me and went step by step. After the first ON/OFF pair, I was able to program the rest of the settings without using the sheet.Basically, there are 7 pairs of ON/OFF settings that you can program. For each pair, you must:1. Set the ON time.2. Select day or days to run the program. Here, you can choose a single day, weekdays, or weekends.3. Set the Hour. This will also give you the option of selecting the Sunrise or Sun-down times.4. Set the minute.5. Set the corresponding OFF time (repeats steps 2-4 above).... repeat for 6 other ON/OFF pairs if needed.Once it's all programmed, you can press the SELECT FUNCTION button to:1. Stay ON, ignoring all programming2. Stay OFF, ignoring all programming3. Auto ON, keeps it ON until the next program tells it to turn OFF then continue with programming schedule4. Auto OFF, keeps it OFF until the next program tells it to turn ON then continue with programming schedule5. Some other one's but I forget what they are... i think they are random (RDM) so that it turns ON/OFF within 30 minutes of your programmed times, but I have never used this, just the first 4.If you try to program before it's plugged in, the screen will be super dim because the (single AA) battery is meant to keep the programming in memory in case of a power-outage, not to run the system. As soon as it's plugged in, the screen will be more readable.Overall, I like the unit better than the type that you put the little plastic plugs into because it offers more variety. Note: I live in northern California, where in never really gets too cold or too wet. It gets really hot, though (over 100* F), for weeks at a time, and it has held up throughout the summer. 5Decent outdoor timer for low voltage lighting I want to run my low voltage lighting from dusk to 11:00 pm each night. I have used transformers with photocells, but they never work well, especially with Seattle's often gray days that cause the lights to come on in the middle of the day. I have transformers with just mechanical clocks, but I have to reset the on time several times a year (including when daylight savings happens). With this timer, you just set the exact dusk time for your area once using the time listed in the local paper, and it calculates it for every day thereafter, including taking care of the daylight savings time change. I will never have to touch it again, except to change the battery infrequently.Despite some negative reviews, I found it quite easy to program, although the instructions could have been written a bit better (everything is crammed onto a single sheet of paper). I also wasn't able to figure out from the online information what type of sockets it has and where they are located before buying it (there are two 3 pin sockets located on the bottom of the unit). As long as it has a long life-time, it is an excellent unit and well priced.12/15/16 update: I had this originally as 5 stars and bought a second one after I reviewed it. However, after 1 1/2 years the first one I received stopped working properly so I am considerably less impressed. $20 isn't so much to spend, but I am disappointed. I think I will build a small enclosure for the new one since I think it is possible that water got in through the battery compartment in the back during a heavy rain (it seems a bit damp in there). In any event, given the short life I am now down to 3 stars. 3I bought it because the Intermatic dial timer is bad. I should have known they would make 9 ... I bought it because the Intermatic dial timer is bad. I should have known they would make 9 left turns to go right. The control should be 30 seconds to set. Set time of day, set time on, set time off. But no, it takes 20 minutes. Holding a button and the selection scrolls through, but at an inconsistent interval. I just don't like it. I bought it hoping it doesn't lose time like the manual timer the landscape company installed. It did turn on. I will see if it turns off in the morning, and works every day like it should. 2Worked for a few days... Worked for a few days and quit working right. The display is all messed up so you can't read anything, displays all 4's, all 9's or whatever. Buttons are flaky. It was tucked up under the eve of the roof, against the house, next to attic vents, no way any rain would get in there.Had two older models not make it 1 season, and one of them, the outlet plastic melted.Tried to give Intermatic another shot with the newer model....nope...third time, now I am the fool! 1AT LAST! A TIMER THAT WORKS. I needed a TIMER that would come on around sunset and go off around 11pm. Sounds easy but not that easy. If I used the type that come on at DUSK my Christmas Lights would turn it back off. I found one that almost worked but if I accidentally turned off the porch light that was controlling the TIMER it would not come back on once I turned the porch light back on. I tried the mechanical type but they were NIGHTMARES to get the time set correctly. Any adjustment to the on-off time would move the TIME DIAL and then I go back to square one. This TIMER has a AA replaceable BATTERY which keeps time if the porch light has been turned off. It comes on at 5:30 pm and goes off at 10:30pm. YouTube has a good VIDEO on how to set it if the printed INSTRUCTIONS confuse you. 5Not sure it works - too complicated to setup I think this might have worked if I figured out how to program it. I even read the instructions, thought I had it setup, but it never came on. Maybe defective, but also possible user error.Bottom line, it should be intuitive and VERY easy to setup timers. The menus and controls were not very self explanatory.I am going to get an Alexa managed device. Using an app should make it pretty dummy proof. 2
