Very slow on new routers Context: WiFi and Bluetooth on my Surface Pro 3 suddenly stopped working one day. Tried all kinds of methods, nothing works. Contacted Microsoft, and they said they can gave me an exchange for $450. No way. I need a USB device that gives me WiFi and Bluetooth and reasonable small. Then I find this. It's only the size of a wireless mouse dongle and offers both WiFi and Bluetooth, no bulky antenna. It is the smallest WiFi Bluetooth 2-in-1 adapter I found. Plugging it onto my Surface Pro 3 has minimal impact on portability. (Though it takes up the only USB port Surface Pro 3 has, but this blame is on Microsoft.) It is not simple plug-and-play on Windows 10 (anniversary edition), and it does not work immediately after installing driver (requires a workaround as described [...], but it saved my Surface Pro 3 from being a useless brick. Hopefully Edimax engineers will fix the Windows 10 driver installation problem. That would make this product really awesome.Update: I find its wifi signal not as good as Surface built-in wifi. In some places where I used to have a bit slow but usable connection before the built in wifi died, I now have very slow connection that's sometimes now useable. Though given the size it's unreasonable to expect it work as well as built-in wifi.Update: it worked fine with my old Comcast router. Later I upgraded to a TP-Link Archer C7 router, which supports dual band and 1000Mbps. However, this tremendously slow down wifi when using Edimax with my Surface. I am only able to get about 1Mbps or even less and the connection is unstable. It's not usable. All my other devices work fine so it's unlikely to be the router's fault. It might be the case that the newer dual band wifi somehow interferes with Edimax and causes this problem. I tried contacting Edimax customer service and tried the settings they provided but no lock. I really wish this device work, but it doesn't. 3Won't work if your computer already has a Bluetooth card WiFi installed easily on Windows 10 with installation utility from manufacturer. Bluetooth functionality could not be used because my laptop already has Bluetooth hardware. The card with the WiFi and Bluetooth on my laptop is partially broken I think, as the range on both services is terrible, hence this product. The drivers for the two were incompatible, causing BSOD errors whenever the computer was restarted. Attempts to uninstall the Bluetooth hardware drivers were unsuccessful - they reappeared after each restart. The only way I could make the Bluetooth from the dongle work was to restart the computer without the dongle inserted, uninstall the hardware Bluetooth drivers from Device Manager, then insert the dongle. The computer won't restart with the dongle inserted and restarting reinstalls the hardware Bluetooth drivers anyway, so this just wasn't sustainable. The WiFi speeds were also much slower than my previous Edimax dongle. I'm returning this item. 2Not Quite "Out of the Box" ready.... This thing is AWESOME! BUT, you might want to read below so you don't receive it and get all ticked off and send it back. This product shipped BEFORE Windows 10 got the Anniversary update. So the drivers included in the package are out of date. HOWEVER, I called Edimax and spoke with their tech support. He was extremely polite and helpful (probably the engineer for this do-hicky). He got this thing working for me in 30 seconds flat. But you can also get the same how-to right off their website. You're basically telling Windows to accept a "composite USB device". If that's not good enough for you, you can download the latest drivers from their site. Here's the link. Just scroll down to section 8 for this particular device.Once I had all this figured it, it worked like a dream! 5Works with Nvidia Jetson Nano Review for "Edimax EW-7611ULB 2-in-1 Wi-Fi & Bluetooth 4.0 Nano USB Adapter"I got it working on the Nvidia Jetson Nano, it takes a bit of work. You're going to read a lot of bad reviews about this dongle where it has problems maintaining a connection too, but there are solutions for that. After about an hour of playing around, I got it to work stable, both WiFi and Bluetooth. I even wrote my own guide, that combines information from a few different websites into one page to help people install this dongle for embedded linux.I got file transfer speeds of about 2 megabytes/sec over my home WiFi. I was able to connect a Bluetooth game controller and view the data. 5Did not work for me I could not install the driver that came with it because I do not have a cd drive, the link for blue tooth driver on the web site is to the linux drivers only (even though it says windows in the link). Tech support site has a picture of a person with a headset, but there is no phone number or live chat. They did respond quickly by email, sending me the driver install as an attachment. The computer locked up a few minutes after installing it. After reboot it did not lock up again. Tried the blue tooth with my parrot headphones. The driver disables my USB headset, so I cannot switch back and forth. The sound does not work for some applications. (headset works fine with all applications on another computer with built-in blue tooth.) I think the driver is bad for windows 10 64 bit. 1Some draw backs involving drivers, I/0s and OS. Good device. Edimax EW-7611ULB 2 in 1 USB dongle is able to connect to both wifi and bluetooth.Upon my initial tests, I was able to use it through USB 1.0 to 2.0. Worked well through USB to Firewire Dongle, but had issues with USB 3.0 to 3.1.=====Operating Systems encountered a few issues when involving drivers. Windows 7 to Windows 10 / 10 S worked wonderfully with minimal issues. Apple OS users may run into some problems due to the lack of driver support for this device. Linux / Android OS users will find that this device runs well on their system. If there are issues, make sure to use the terminal commands to get the appropriate or latest driver updates. Server / HTPC Operating Systems: If you have Windows based or Linux Based Server / HTPC OS then this device will work appropriately. However I would not recommend this as your main connection and instead opt in for a Network Interface Card instead fif you are running a business. This however would work for a home server or HTPC.Overall I do like this device, but there are a few draw backs such as driver support and standard I/0 compatibility. Furthermore there is an indicator light that would make this a bit of an eye sore since it lights up time to time. I recommend to put this behind your desktop I/0 and not into the front. 3Solid product with no issues since 2017 Currently using this when the wifi card of my Surface Pro 3 broke. At first, I was skeptical, but it has actually worked fairly well. The Internet speed is acceptable (rarely any buffering when watching videos on YouTube or Netflix) and the Bluetooth connection is solid as well. Connecting to wifi is sometimes slow/doesn't connect to networks automatically, but this is a relatively minor issue for me. It also gets a little hot after a few hours, but I haven't noticed that this has affected its performance. The installation was a bit tedious, but I would recommend looking at the top comment for this device by Michael Ronayne for guidance. After following his instructions, I was able to install the device with no issues. I have had this device since April 2017 and so far (fingers crossed), this device is still working smoothly. Given the small form factor and usability, I would recommend this if you are having any wifi/bluetooth issue. 5Spotty Wi-Fi speeds, non-compliant Bluetooth The Wi-Fi adapter portion of this device is sometimes unreliable. I have the USB plugged in to the outside of my desktop case because my motherboard wasn't compatible with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so it's getting minimal interference to the router, but streaming video and loading websites is sometimes spotty. At times, streaming at 480p is slow, while at others, 720p is lightning fast. Sometimes pages load instantaneously, while at other times they may take between 5 to 10 seconds to load. Download speeds through web browsers are ok and usually pretty consistent, but not really optimal to what I'm used to on my laptop with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built in. I've downloaded a few steam games through this and actually got download speeds up to 7 MB/s, but its not usually that consistent across the system compared to the 12 MB/s I get on my laptop on the same network.Bluetooth, however, seems to barely work at all. Bluetooth is installed on my computer, and a Generic Adapter appears in my Device manager, and it's even in Windows 10 settings. It's very clearly installed, but whenever I try to connect a device to it, it returns with "we didn't receive any signal from the device", regardless of it being discoverable, and a lower Bluetooth version (3.2) than the device itself (4.0). I've looked around online for solutions, and I may be missing something, but for the most part, it hasn't worked right out of the box for me in regards to the Bluetooth installation.I give this product three stars because of my uncertain conclusions about the Bluetooth compatibility, and the variable Wi-Fi speeds, but also for the greatest price that you'll find online for any adapter like this. The performance that this device allows is sometimes really surprising, and I give it credit for that. If you're looking for a budget solution however, I would recommend the Wi-Fi only adapter and try and not use Bluetooth devices if you can. 3Incompatible with Raspbian Bottom line: DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK MANUFACTURED BY A DECEPTIVE COMPANY. Go give your money to an honest company that supports and stands behind its products. This Edimax does not work with the Raspberry Pi 2 B running the newest Raspbian updates. Edimax is not updating their support for new kernels which is a huge foul, and furthermore their posts about its specs and compatibility is grossly misleading. Additionally, when I contacted them about swapping it for another one that actually works as they claim, they gave me the run around and refused to do anything to help. From their article on their Website about setting it up with the Raspberry Pi:The top of the page indicates that there should be no issues with compatibility. "We are going to show you how to install the WiFi and Bluetooth drivers on Raspberry Pi 2(RP2) running latest Raspbian (2018-04-18, kernel v4.14.38.)." However, hidden down at the bottom of the page is this gem: "Please note that the steps below work for kernel up to v4.4 only. If you have updated to the latest one (v4.14 or higher), the driver compilation will fail! At this moment, there is no workaround for this." 1PLEASE don't waste your $ The overall rating of this product isn't bad. I ignored the 1-star ratings which commented on the constant disconnects and slow speed. Initially, it seemed to work fine. Disconnects about every hour, which I attributed to the small size and limited antenna. Gradually, the disconnects became more frequent and now it won't stay connected long enough to load a web page and click on a link.Although I am just inside my return window, I think I will throw it in the trash rather than let some poor slob pick up the same piece of junk.BTW, I bought two and both perform the same. 1
