Customer Reviews

Very nice collection of carefully prepared specimens.I bought a very affordable, high quality Celestron Microscope for my granddaughters, ages 8 and 6. Of course, I wanted it to excite them and nurture their scientific curiosity. It did! I began my instructions with all the classic easy wow factor tricks -- a hair from each of their heads, some sugar crystals, salt crystals, a blade of grass, and even a captured and somewhat "smushed" insect or two. Those specimens sound easy enough, but my preparation was pretty sloppy. When I opened the impressive wooden box, the children and I were wowed by the variety of prepared slides and how easily they could be focused at even the scope's highest magnification. Even a 67 year old can be blown away by viewing tiny animals, including one celled organisms, and a variety of specimens I had never seen offered; e.g., nerve cells and intestinal cells. This is a fantastic tool for broadening the enjoyment of any microscope by any novice user. I rate it a Must Have! 5Get them started in ScienceI got these for my 6yr old Granddaughter to go with her 40X microscope. Perhaps this sounds like a strange gift for such a young little girl but she loves to look at the different slides and even makes her own. She gets it from me I suppose I made a career out of working with bacteria. I am sure she doesn't understand what she is looking at half the time but some day it will register. Start them on science as young as you can and this is a good way as any to get started. The slides are labeled and listed in order. The case keeps them safe. 5Slides varyI have a school microscope with 4/10/40 and most of the slides were very clear with excellent staining and distinguishing characteristics could be seen.Other slides appear to be poorly stained or the item is too thin and there was little to no contrast. A few had such small items that I could not see distinguishing characteristics so clear on other slides. About 2/3 of the slides were very good and usable with my scope. I was unaware the covers are not permanently affixed to the slide but use some non-hardening sticky glue so the cover can move if pushed. I accidentally pressed a cover too hard with a lense and the cover broke oozing glue over the lense. The slides have rounded corners which is great for kids. The wooden slide box is well finished and holds the slides in place which are easy to remove. 3The slide quality is fine and the samples are goodThe slide quality is fine and the samples are good, however the case is a cheap piece of junk. There is small cuts on each end that hold the slides apart. The case is about 5mm to wide and therefore there is only 1mm or so that holds the slides. They frequently fall out of place and jostle around. I guess you get what you pay for. I actually was going to return them and get a more expensive set but the return window passed so i'll make do. 3Good set of slides with a bit of emphasis on plantsThe slides are well prepared and kept my child's attention and enthusiasm for some time. I perceive a bit of an emphasis on plants... at any rate, the slides I received in my set were labelled as follows,1. Pemicillum (sic) W.M.2. Rhizopus Sporongia W.M.3. Chlamvdomonas W.M.4. Pine Leaf C.S.5. Leaf of Winter Jasmine C.S.6. Corn Root Tip L.S.7. Vicia Faba Young Root C.S.8. Corn Stem C.S.9. Corn Stem L.S.10. Curcubits Stem C.S.11. Curcubits Stem L.S.12. Basswood Stem C.S.13. Basswood Stem L.S.14. Pollen W.M.15. Daphni Sp W.M.16. Hydra W.M.17. Paramecium W.M.18. Rotifer W.M.19. Honey Bee Mouth Parts W.M.20. Cardiac Muscle Sec21. Skeletal Muscle L.S, C.S.22. Dog Small Intestine C.S.23. Spinal Card (sic) C.S.24. Motor Neurous (sic) Cell W.M.25. Blood Smear HumanIt appears that "C.S" stands for cross-section and "L.S" stands for longitudinal section. I couldn't figure out what "W.M" stood for. 4They are a big disappointment. There are only about three or four slides ...I bought these slides based on the high reviews here. They are a big disappointment. There are only about three or four slides that are useable out of the twenty five. Many are stained and the stain is over applied such that you can't see any detail. The slides are filled with dust and other particles that are noticeable. None came broken and the storage box is nice. 2Reasonable diversity for the priceThis prepared slide set is of reasonable quality and has quite a diversity for its size. A lot of the slides are merely "adequate" and only one or two are "exceptional". This is a good introduction to the world of microscopy by you will quickly go on to make your own specimens. 4Slides Not Made Properly-Low Quality Materials ?Well, they were fairly good for the spring and early summer. But then, they started to excrete and slide "fixer" clear compound when the room temp remained at high 80's for a few days. The case of slides were never exposed to sunlightor any other head (or radiation source). The manufacturer used the cheapest specimen fixer they could find.A microscope slide should last several decades, not several months.Don't buy unless you plan to use for only a few months.Sorry.Gary S. 3Very cool slidesThe slides appear to be prepared well, and there is a wide variety of things to look at, making it a great companion gift with a microscope. The wooden box is also nicer than I expected and should withstand use by the children that will be the main users. The reason that I only gave it 4 stars is that I think that a better job could have been done labeling the slides. The included sheet which lists the identity of the samples on each slide contains only abbreviated scientific names, which really seems unnecessarily brief. Why not include the common name and maybe even a one sentence description, or a tip on what is interesting about it or what to look for? We can always use Bing or Google to fill in the gaps, but that's more effort than the 6 through 9 -year olds whom this was purchased for are willing/able to expend. 4Celestron Prepared SlidesThis was bought for a 9 yo grandson who has a very interesting little mind and LOTS of interesting questions; some of these questioned can't be answered with a simply. I also have a 10 yo grandson who is already having to learn basic anatomy/physiology which includes knowing basic cellular structure and function and how to draw/label these on his tests. I assumed the 9 yo would be doing the same thing next year. With that in mind, I bought this along with a microscope and slide making kit from Amazon as Christmas gifts and today is Christmas Eve so I don't know if he will really use these just yet, but I think he will find it very cool to look at these slides and see what stuff really looks like. We buy telescopes for kids so they can look at huge things far away, but there is a whole undiscoved world within and on our own bodies that is just as cool as anything you may see with the naked eye or a telescope. Now, I am a PA so, I am just a little biased, but this kid has a pretty interesting way of looking at things and this will give him one more view of the world he lives in. 5
