Terrible Bemis idea What can I say about a toilet seat except to refer to its installation. Bemis made a good product when I bought their similar "whisper-close" seat back in 2012. I'll ignore the fact that the seat mechanics malfunctioned after only three years because it did work perfectly for the duration. I searched high & low for that same model seat when recently buying a replacement, but had too settle for this model with the chrome hinges I wanted. Unfortunately, Bemis has decided that people needed a "feature" to allow the seat to be removed periodically for cleaning ( I'd argue that that feature is ridiculous because people in this 21st century do not urinate onto the seat hinges. Even so, the seals that came with the original seat did a good job of preventing unclean-able hinges). Installed as directed, this seat remains unshakable with the lids lowered, but when up, the seat can be joggled side-to-side in a very unstable manner. A phone call to their support got me nowhere, in fact the support person hardly knew how the seat is supposed to work. So I will live with this for awhile and then go looking elsewhere for a non-Bemis brand - which are very few now that so many brands are now owned by Bemis. 2I It's what I expected but the biscuit color (346) is a little bit lighter than my American Standard Linen Color toilet (222). To be fair, the American Standard branded seat I had was also a slightly lighter color (I did not take stars off for that)..For me the Quick release loses a star because the chrome twist off mechanism, when in the locked position, can easily be moved a few degrees past the point where they are square or straight.. It doesn't snap into place or prevent you from turning the latch passed where it would look correct, You have to eyeball it. There's no mechanical issue because of that. The seat is still locked in place. It just looks bad when it's not straight. Once twisted in position, it will likely stay that way but it can easily be moved (the latch not the seat) during cleaning. I should have bought the one without the quick release.Mine was packed well (seat wrapped in plastic the inside the Bemis retail box which was packed inside an amazon box) which is why I was surprised to see a 1"x1" area with dark scratches on the seat lid. Fortunately it was some kind of glue that came off easily with alcohol.Overall the seat is good and the hinge seems solid. 4Nice to look at, but hinges stop working Sadly, the fit and finish are exactly what I'm looking for. HOWEVER, I purchased three of them about 1.5 years ago, and a fourth about six months ago. I am now replacing all of them because, after about 6-9 months, the hinges stop closing on their own, and eventually freeze up completely. The fourth one I purchased was to replace one of the first three. All of these seats are cleaned thoroughly on a weekly basis, at least. I have tried removing the seat and soaking the hinges in warm water with a tiny bit of dish soap to clear any possible deposits. Didn't work. I've applied spray lubricant. Didn't work. They now need to be literally pushed down to close, and need to be pried open when used. That's too much required handling of any toilet seat. Also, the finish has yellowed on the entire seat and lid. This is not due to urine, but seems to be a result of using bleach based cleaners. These seats are not cheap, and I would expect for them to last well beyond a year with normal use and proper maintenance. I am now forced to replace all of them with a different brand. Kiss that money goodbye. 1Solid, strong, looks great and fits perfectly. Solid, strong, good fit, and a great self-closing mechanism. I'm buying a new toilet for another bathroom just so I can get another one of these seats. 5Top Quality Metal Hinge is Superior to Plastic Ones Had several slow close like this but with plastic hinges. They kept breaking (I'm a heavy guy - 300 lbs.). So, found and bought this one with metal hinges. First one lasted well and wife loved the slow close toilet seat. I was surprised by installation design which has an elongated snap off portion over the nut (which is plastic but tightens on a metal screw). Finger tighten and then use a wrench (or socket if your toilet design allows for that -- 2 of ours did and one did not). Just easier with a socket. Either way, you tighten to the elongated piece snaps off and the seat is perfectly tightened. None of them have loosened after nearly a year. Just installed a third one because wife was upset that the total plastic, normal design hinge on the third toilet kept coming loose and had to be re-tightened all the time. But not this metal hinge with this innovative snap off design. It's perfect and easy. Seat and cover are composite wood, not plastic. And so far, they have lasted well, too. We really like this design. Fit both types of elongated bowls. Simple twist mechanism on hinges allow easy removal for cleaning, just like the plastic ones but these are much more solid and last longer. Look nice, too. 5Molded wood is not wood but probably sawdust and a binder of some sort. Slightly deceptive calling it wood but molded wood is now pretty common. I had and old wood seat that still worked fine but the finish had worn off in places. I bought this one three years ago but since the old one would not die and I could touch it up with appliance touch up I waited till now to finally install this one. Needless to say I was shocked when I unpacked it and found it looked like a formed plastic seat just a bit heavier. Tried to attach the seat and one of the plastic nuts stripped immediately. Good thing the sturdy old Bemis had a compatible nut so I could finish the install. Only time will tell if the new Bemis represents an upgrade or a downgrade. I mostly just don't like being fooled - a little like someone selling you particle board and calling it mahogany. 3Not Bemis Quality Even tightened down all the way, the seat still wobbles. The edges of the seat itself are rough. The "Easy Clean" latch covers won't stay straight. The lid is not flat, it's bowl-shaped, so if you have any condensation in the bathroom, you get a small puddle on the lid. I've always bought Bemis toilet seats and this one is the worst quality I've gotten. 2Short Term Comfort Very nice when it was working - Lasted about 18 months & then the 'slow closing' hinges stopped working (cost: about $35 per year of usage) - Now the seat & lid just hang wherever you set them......This is my 2nd purchase of this seat, with the same exact results - 2Went on easy and fit perfectly Teenager used toilet bowl cleaner to clean the toilet seat and ended up discoloring the seat. It was clean but the discoloration made it look constantly dirty. Bought this to replace the original Bemis one that was there. The one it replace had all metal pieces (even the screw parts), was heavier, slightly thinner, and felt denser (definitely a higher quality material) but this one fit perfectly and went on so easy. The soft close seats is a definite must. 5Looked good and worked well for a couple years, but molded wood is lacking in durability I bought one of these seats for our master bathroom in mid-2015 and liked it enough that, after a few months of use, I ordered two more for our other two toilets in early-2016. Look and function have been fine (happy to say we've not had the hinge issues others have reported). However, within the last couple months, cracks have appeared on the seats of our two more frequently used ones. I'm the heaviest in our household at 6'1", 215lbs so not what I'd consider overtaxing these weight-wise when even the flimsiest of patio chairs are rated for 250lbs.If this was a $10 generic brand seat I'd be more apt to give it a pass for only making it to the 2-3 year mark but at $50 I was expecting several more years worth of longevity. 2
