Customer Reviews

Every cable on your network should be a different colorPeople sometimes ask me why Ethernet cables come in different colors. It's not because purple cables look cool in your daughter's room. Okay, they do; that wasn't the reason. It's for line tracing. You have eight users on your network. You're sysadmin. When you set the system up, you just bought eight white cables. And now, every time something goes wrong on a user's system you have to very carefully follow the cable from the user's desk to the Ethernet switch. Labeling the ports on the switch won't help; the first thing any user will try if his or her workstation forgets how to talk to the network is to go to the switch and move their cable to a different port...and they never put it back the way you had it after they finish, now do they?I have eight users on my network. I'm sysadmin. When I set the system up, I ordered eight different cable colors. If Julia's computer forgets it's networked, I can look behind it...ah ha! Her cable is green! I can trace that in no time!Don't be you. Be me. Buy lots of different color cables. 5Best CAT5 Cable I've OwnedBelkin CAT5 cables are by far the best ones that I have owned. I have bought from both them and Amazon and this gets an extra star because it has a clip that holds it in the port on your computer or wall. I can't stand losing internet connection in the middle of watching a movie because I decided to move my laptop. This cable is also of a higher quality than most others, so far none that I own have frayed or split at the end through constant twisting and pulling. I highly recommend this over the AmazonBasics one, the extra dollar will save you many annoyances.Cheers. 5Belkin 7-ft RJ45 CAT 5E ethernet cable: Belkin doesn't understand -- don't kink electronic cables!RJ45 cables are so common these days, you'd think everything would be worked out by now... apparently not so.The worst thing you can do to any electronic cable is kink it, bend it sharply, put a crimp in it. But my 7 footers, shown on Amazon in an appropriately nicely formed loop, all arrived in a tight wad with sharp bends every 3 1/2 to 4 1/5 inches along the entire length, and then tightly bound in the middle with a wire tie. Each kink even created a discolored joint on the cable jacket. Cables don't like sharp bends (mine have 17 tight bends along a 7' cable), those kinks make cables hard to string and route along small spaces, they make a rat's nest behind my comm gear, and they jeopardize the integrity of the cable.C'mon Belkin, your "Pro Series" packaging is a silly gimmick, because at a thrifty $2.50 per cable, I'm betting dollars to donuts there's nothing special about your cables, no rare metals, no exotic coatings, no braided stainless shielding... it's a generic Ethernet cable. Nothing more, nothing less. Kindly treat it as such. Treat them kindly and fore go the glitzy packaging.Meanwhile, my 15' cables from Mediabridge happily arrived in a simple cardboard box, in a neat 5" diameter coil. No kinks, no sharp bends. I try to order from Mediabridge when possible because they seem to know how to package and deliver cables that work out of the box, no fancy packaging, no rocket science, no need to hang a cable for a week to work out the kinks, just a sound cable. Unfortunately, they did not have 7-footers when I needed them. So I went with Belkin, after all it's just a cable. Next time I'll wait for Mediabridge to re-stock. 3Best price in town and no problems...,except...I'll keep it short and simple. The price is the best in town and no problems when connected from my modem to the computer. The packaging was the usual plastic bubble over a piece of cardboard...the good news is the plastic bubble was easily removed from the cardboard without having to spend the better part of a day getting through the packaging. This ease of access to the product is a rare commodity. Most manufacturers seem to think packaging (especially for electronic items and toys) should be a test of endurance with possibly slicing off one's fingers to remove the product from the packaging. Highly recommended for its low price, no operational problems when installed, and ease of removing item from packaging.Update to above review: I went to move my laptop from my desk to use it as a true off line laptop (no internet connection). Removing the cable from the ethernet jack was difficult. It was a bit of a fight to unplug the cable. I'm all for good tight conectivity but not so tight that the cable is hard to remove. When I connected the cable again it required a bit of force for the cable to lock into place. No problem if the cable is permanently connected but it's enough of a problem to reduce a five star rating to a four star. 4I am connected with this cable as I write this reviewWorks well! I needed a shorter cable that would not get in the way, but allow me to move away from my desk (7 Foot). I can enjoy higher speeds with this CAT 5e cable connected vs my wireless connection. I like the snagless design it offers good protection from tab breakage.Belkin International, Inc., is a American manufacturer of computer hardware that specializes in connectivity devices, headquartered in Los Angeles, California. I feel all warm and fuzzy supporting a American company.I have purchased Belkin cables in the past and i still have a few of their cables laying around they are still working after years of use. I have some missing tabs on a couple of my generic CAT 5e cables. This is the reason for my interest in Belkin's snagless design. Without the locking tabs the cables slip out if moved. 4Great cable!I bought the pink 7ft cable and really like it. I took it to a workshop where no wireless signals were permitted (radio telescope workshop.. obvious reasons for that necessity), and everyone had ethernet cables and it was just a mess with all the cables and trying to figure out which went with which laptop, etc. But, thanks to this distinctive cable, I didn't have to be concerned with any of those issues--or with my cable magically disappearing! (which seemed to be the fate for a few of the many, many mundane blue ones). 5Quality cable at a reasonable price. This is a well built cable and is priced at a reasonable price. Some cables have ends that are really cheap and will break apart or show the wires after a few plug-ins or moving of the device it's plugged into. These seem to be well put together and Belkin is a quality company IMHO. I've used a number of their products over the years and I've always been happy with them. Also, the fact that these cables come in multiple colors is GREAT! You can have a different colors for each room (i.e., use blue cables for your office, white for the kitchen, etc.). If you have a problem, it makes it easy, even for your young kid, to trace it back. Internet not working in the kitchen but is just fine in other locations. Check the white cable running from the router - you're using white in the kitchen. Or, if your kid looses Internet privileges to his games and computer, easily know what cable to unplug from the router! Or, if you're needing a specific color to help hide a cable or match a color scheme, it's nice that you're not relegated to just one choice. 5Don't stay completely connectedI have no idea what is so different about this cable from all the others I've ever used, but I cannot seem to get it to stay connected. I have two of these, and even though they are pushed in completely (to where they "click"), they seem to always be coming JUST loose enough to lose connection. For example, I have my computer connected to my router with this cord, and if there is any movement from either end of it, it will disconnect, and I have to give it a little shove into the computer or the router to re-connect it (it never comes OUT, just doesn't stay tightly connected, I guess). Thankfully these were quite inexpensive so I don't feel as ripped off as I might if I had paid more, but it is still frustrating. 2 Great Belkin Cable & Great Design Here I like it, especially for the price. I had purchased a cable at Wal-Mart for about the same price, took it home, opened the package and it was a piece of crap. It looked like the connector would break off, after I'd unhooked it from my laptop 4 or 5 times. This one I saw on Amazon is FIVE TIMES BETTER. Nice design, nice weight, does what I need. It does have a different type of connector that hooks to the computer. You put your finger kind of in the center of the connector to detach it. At first, I thought it was kind of weird, because of the wings, but it's great, because it really protects your actual plastic connector from breaking or bending. Thumbs up on the design. 4Great cablesI bought 4 of these so i could connect everything around my tv to the internet. (Xbox 360, Playstation 3, DVR, and a computer)These cables are great, they are high quality, and have sturdy connectors. They are gigabit cables.I stream 1080p .mkv files from my laptop to my Xbox 360 via Windows Media Center, wireless N does not cut it, but these cables do the job.Even though I doubt I will need speeds over 100mbps, I like having gigabit cables, and I like these cables better than the cheap blue ones on amazon. The cheap blue cables have weak connectors in my experience, and have broken off.I would definitely recommend this cable. 5
