Worked Well (for 2 Years)I'm a realist and I don't expect these kinds of "throw-away" import electronics to last very long, so I'm not terribly upset that this shredder died after 2 years of use (R.I.P. January 2010 - March 2012). After opening the machine and poking around for a few minutes, I've determined the cause of death to be a burnt-out LED bulb, which acts as the sensor that starts the shredder when paper is inserted in the slot. Kind of disappointing that this little part is the Achilles' heel of the machine, but that's the way it goes. This shredder worked well while it was alive. I work in the video field, so I needed a shredder that could destroy DVDs of old projects. This one did the job, and of course shredded regular paper, business cards and credit cards, as well. I would consider buying this model again, and may just do so... unless I can figure out how to re-solder the tiny LED sensors. 4Good powerful shredderBought one of these several years ago and it worked like a champ. We have TONS of junk mail and other personal info that needs to be shredded. Our problem is that we overworked it. Towards the end of it's life, it started slowing down, put off an odor, and started making noise. Being the handy guy I am that likes to tear things apart and fixing them, I disassembled the unit. I found that in our overzealous shredding, we overheated one of the bearings in the electric motor which in turn fused the bearing to the motor shaft. I was able to get the parts separated and was in the process of somewhat overhauling the motor when I accidentally broke the bearing and it's retainer. I looked for a replacement bearing to no avail. It is cheaper to buy a new unit. With that said, if we had observed a duty limit on this shredder, it would still be running. The guts and gears are all metal vs many of the others that use a lot of plastic. We will be buying another one of these (I will have the extra parts from the old one to help keep it running for the foreseeable future). 4Aurora AS1018CD shreddar review by Frank FeltyI purchased this about 3 weeks ago after searching many different shreddars online and in stores. I decided on this Aurora AS1018CD because it will shred 11 pages at a time, cd's, staples and credit cards. I measured the height of the unit before ordering as I never found one of this model in a store to look at. Measuring was tall enough for what I thought would be a big basket on bottom for the shredded material. Well, when I received it, just looking at the box before opening I knew right then that it wasn't very tall and had made a mistake, however, I opened it up and the main unit is about 6 to 7 inches high. That's was what fooled me on looking at the measurement in the specs. I assumed it would be like my older unit that went "south", which was only about 2" high. (Guess that's why it was light duty and didn't do credit cards, cd's, few copies..like 3 or 4 at a time). The Aurora basket is small, actually too small as I used it immediately and it does fill up fairly quick. THIS IS WHY I GAVE IT A RATING OF ONLY 4 STARS!!!Now, as I said, I used it immediately shredding many boxes of old tax files that I had never gotten rid of and believe me there was a small ton of paperwork to shred. I shredded multiple pages at a time, however, I never did put 11 pages in there, but did go as many as about 8 pages. I shredded a couple credit cards, staples (as it recommended be careful about those) much paper and let me say, this Aurora AS1018CD is a trupper! Absolutely went thru everything that I feed into it with ease. Some reviews I read talked about it being so loud. Well, I found that it was rather quite compared to the one I did have and was very pleased. Also, the instructions that came with the unit said to not put a bag liner into the basket to catch the shredded material. That bothered me as this was exactly what I wanted to do, as without a bag liner, you have to empty the basket into bags and with my old unit being like that (no bag liners)I was always making a mess on the floor and had to vacuum everytime I emptied the basket. So, I looked at this unit very carefully and thought to myself, why is this in the instructions as I don't see anything to cause a problem. So, I went and got some plastic grocery bags which were a little small to fit the basket, but with some careful stretching of the plastic they work fairly well. I put the "heavy" motor top onto the basket and it worked great. The plastic grocery bags are really way to small not going completely to the bottom of the basket. A few days later I was at Sam's Club and found some 10 gallon bags (box of 1000 for $14 and change) and when I got home I tried these and they are a perfect fit. I assume that Aurora said not to use bag liners as probably someone or many people screwed up somehow and got the bag into the motor and messed everything up. But, it works great, no problems at all.So, if you can stand to empty the basket a little more often than you want to, this shreddar with it's strong motor is nothing to worry about as I believe it will be a good shreddar for me for years to come. 4Ugly but gets the job done!Hi I purchased this over a year ago locally after purchasing several other ones that really sucked. When purchasing an appliance it is easy to get sucked in by a good looking machine that really does not work so well. I had purchased several shredders from Staples. While they have some good looking shredders I can say from personal experience that they suck. So I just looked for some hardcore stuff that can shred anything and into tiny pieces because one thing I learned from working at a Japanese insurance company is that privacy and confidentiality are very important. I was trained to shred every document that had any personal information of the clients to ensure nobody steals information. So I figured this is a good habit to start doing at home to protect myself from identity theft. This thing really does shred CDs and DVDs one at a time of course. The confetti cut is a great feature since with a regular shredder it just turns the paper into spaghetti strings which can easily be reassembled if somebody really wants your information from the garbage you throw out. This thing is ugly as hell, but it can go for hours and hours non stop shredding, seriously I know because my neighbor borrows it to shred her mountains of mail every couple of months. After several hours you have to give it a little break for a couple of minutes and you can go ahead shred for more hours. I prefer shredding at least once a week. After using it so much finally my neighbor has decided to ask me to order one for her and one for her boyfriend she is going to give him as an xmas gift! 5It survives where others failedI have been using this unit for several years now and it is, by a large margin, better than any other I've owned. The fact that it has lasted several years unimpaired is enough to convince me since I was going through lesser shredders on the average of one per year. Shredders work hard and puny 'home' home units are not worth the hassle -- buy a good one and use it for years. Tips? It can't hurt to lubricate the cutters using one of pre-made sheets or by simply squirting some lubricating oil onto a sheet of paper and running it through.Wishes? Well, a larger basket would obviate the need to empty it so often but having something the size of a regular office trash can is convenient in the home setting.[edit] After a number of years the shredder failed when presented with a data DVD -- the sort of thing that it handled easily in the beginning. The good news is that the failure point was a gear right off of the motor shaft and the manufacturer sells a replacement for $15 including postage. Replacement is dead simple and anybody with a Phillips screwdriver and enough sense to unplug an appliance before working on it can probably do the repair. Oh, wear a latex glove when handling the gear since it has a grease on it which will stay on your hand and be sure to smear some heavy-ish grease on the new gear to give it a chance. I'll still say that this is the best shredder I've owned and is well worth the price (including the repair part). 5Great for paper, receipts a bit harderReceived it on time and in good condition. Easy to operate, instructions easy to operate. 1 issue I have is its hard to get receipts in (like atm receipts/food store receipts etc.) and this is 50% of what I shred. Paper is really easy, but the entrance has a slight curve which makes it tough for receipts. I tried a CD and a plastic membership card and it worked fine. It does shred the stuffings out of the items (almost to a powder form)! there is NO glueing it back together .LOL.. Not happy about the built in switch that makes it necessary to have use the same bin though. I don't expect to have to replace bin anytime soon but if you had to not sure how much a replacement bin would be. that is why I gave it 3 stars. I have 2 bags of stuff I need to shred so will get those done and will revisit my post then. 3Problematic Shredding CapacityI bought this shredder last month and have used it to capacity twice. Although it claims to be able to shred 10 sheets at a time I never insert more than 2 sheets at a time to avoid wear and tear on the unit. Both times, when I flipped the shredder over in the process of emptying the container I discovered that mounds of paper were bunched around the gears. I had to spend considerable time with a pair of tweezers pulling the paper strips out from between the gears. I have also used lubricant sheets 3x in an effort to clear the gears and allow future paper to pass through more easily. In addition, although this is supposed to be a cross-cut shredder most of the paper was actually strips about 1 to 1 1/2" long. Finally, although the company claims the unit can shred a credit card, the one card I put through emerged fairly intact although a little bent. Priot to this purchase I used a Staples shredder which lasted 10 years. I doubt I will keep this unit much longer. I see the price has dropped by $20 since I bought it. I would not recommend anyone buying this product at even the reduced price. 1Best cross-cut shredder with handleAfter spending weeks reading reviews & researching many different shredders, this one stood out among the rest. I wanted a shredder with a handle for removing the head with one hand & using my other hand to remove left over papers from the head. It's very hard to remove loose papers from the head on the pull-out bin type shredders having the head stationary. When my best friend said he has this model for over 5 years with no problems, I decided to purchase it. It's better & quieter than my 2 1/2 yr defective Fellowes Powershred W11C, 11-Sheet Cross-cut Paper and Credit Card Shredder with Safety Lock (3103201) I'm replacing. 5One Year and Still Shredding Strong...two sheets at a timeI have had this shredder now for almost one year, and it is used daily. The secret to shredders is to ignore the so called ratings with respect to how many sheets it will shred. For example, this is supposedly a 10 sheet shredder. There is no way I would ever attempt to shred 10 sheets at one time with this unit. Not even 5. I shred 2 at a time, once in a while three slip through. The capacity ratings are nothing short of deceptive advertising by the manufacturer. Also, use shredder oil. The Fellowes shredder oil (12 oz, available from Amazon) has worked for me, saturate one sheet of paper and feed it through once a month. Far less paper dust, quieter operation, and likely longer useful life for the unit.My prior shredder was a supposed 5 sheet capacity. I took it back three separate times with three sheets jammed in it. The service agent refused to repair it the 4th time. Claimed I was abusing it. Pointing out it was a 5 sheet rated unit, with only 3 sheets stuck in it, made no difference. If you want to shred 10 sheets at the same time, buy a 25 sheet rated unit. Otherwise you are guaranteed to be unhappy and have a jammed unit on your hands in no time. 3Breaks EasilyThis is the second time I've bought this product. The first one failed after a few months, but I thought it was my fault because I used it a lot and when it failed I thought maybe I had overused it. I ordered another one because I would have two containers and I thought it would be better for changing out the basket when I was too busy to empty it. I liked the way the cutters looked - nice and solid. After a couple of months of average use (I tried to be more careful with the second shredder) it began to make a weird noise - like the cutters were binding. Yesterday I tried shredding 1 CD and it only made it about way through the CD before locking up. I removed it cleaned out everything from the cutter and now all it does is make noise. It won't shred anything . I just don't think this shredder is worth the money. I really need a shredder and now I have to find another one. I wouldn't recommend this shredder to anyone. It just doesn't hold up - even when you baby it. 1
