Customer Reviews

Excellent - I have 5 sets and 4 subwoofersFantastic speakers! I have 5 sets along with 4 of the Audioengine S8 8-inch Powered Subwoofer: Audioengine S8 Black 8-inch Powered Subwoofer. Formerly I was using the Bose Companion 20 speakers and obviously the Audioengine blow the Bose away. I also have quite a few of the Bose SoundTouch 30, 20 and 10's and I prefer the Audioengine A5+. (I use one set in a small bathroom without the subwoofer.)If you share a wall with a neighbor you might not be able to use the subwoofer much. Without the subwoofer in my small bathroom the bass is so-so but for sure not strong enough for my taste - it s MUCH better with the subwoofer. As you can see in the pics it's a bit much to fit on my master bathroom counter but I wouldn't be happy with less. Two small downsides on the subwoofer: A remote would be very helpful to adjust the subwoofer volume. It's difficult to see the notch on the dials to make adjustments. I made a white mark with a white Sharpie (Sharpie Extra Fine Point Poster Paint Marker-White).Other products pictured that I recommend: Adjustable standing/sitting desk: Crank Adjustable Sit to Stand Up Desk with Heavy Duty Steel Frame (60", Silver Frame/Black Top) Tripp Lite Isobar Surge Protector Power Strip: Tripp Lite Isobar 4 Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip, 6ft Cord Right Angle Plug, & $50K INSURANCE (ISOBAR4ULTRA) Motion Sensor USB Rechargeable Lights: Wardrobe Light, OxyLED Motion Sensor Closet Lights, 20 LED Under-Cabinet Lightening, USB Rechargeable Stick-on Stairs Step Light Bar, LED Night Light, Safe Light with Magnetic Strip, 3-pack, T-02U Pyle Subwoofer Sound Isolation Platform: Pyle PSi15 Acoustic Subwoofer Sound Isolation Platform Dampening Recoil Stabilizer Speaker Riser Platform Base (for Studio Monitor, Subwoofer, Loudspeakers, Shelf Speakers, etc.) 15'' x 15'', Single Unit Audioengine Desktop Speaker Stands: Audioengine DS2 Desktop Speaker Stands (Pair) 5You just can't go wrong buying these speakersI had these speakers for about a couple of weeks, and they sound very good.PROS:1. They are easy to set up.2. With a google chromecast audio with wifi streaming music, the audio quality is top notch and they shine.3. I have these hooked up to my Audio Technica LP120 turntable, and they sound fantastic.4. They look absolutely fantastic with a nice glossy white finish.CONS:1. I miss adjusting the audio in terms of treble, mids, bass, etc. I have a feeling they would be even better if hooked them up to an external audio amp with those controls, although its not necessary.Overall, you just can't go wrong with these speakers. I think the biggest competitor for these Speakers would be Elac's debut B6 (although those are not powered). 4As advertised...sublime!I recently had my old set of computer speakers die on me after 3 years (of course, out of warranty). I was very happy with that set, but had no luck in finding someone to repair them (even the manufacturer was no help, shame on you Corsair!).Now I don't know if everyone else is like me, but when I have to replace something that I liked, it has to be either the same exact item...or an upgrade. The worse thing for me would be to get something and be underwhelmed when compared to the last item I owned. After doing lots of research around the internet, I kept getting steered into the direction of Audioengine. I've had my eye on the A5's ever since, and once Black Friday came I blinked and took the plunge.Long story short, I am extremely satisfied with the purchase. I don't pretend to be an expert who goes into the numbers and breaks down the science, I don't have the time for that. But what I am, is someone who has been purchasing and listening to high end audio equipment in my home, car etc etc for many years now. Price has never been as important to me as my satisfaction (within reason of course). I know what my ear likes, and I know what clean and quality sound like. These speakers hit the sweet spot and go way beyond. I am now picking up sounds and even imperfections in audio recordings that I never heard before with my old set of speakers, there's a lot more warmth and detail than before. I also love my music loud, and these speakers play all the way to the edge of "sheeesh that's too loud!" without any distortion or loss of quality (no bass drop off etc). One minor critique I would have is that for people who enjoy listening to the full spectrum of music, or simply enjoy their hip hop, reggaeton etc...you will most definitely need a subwoofer for these. My old Corsairs had a massive sub, so I don't think I would have been happy without one. I was prepared for this, and already had a sub that wasn't being used from an old home theater set up. Again, this is a minor critique since anyone who enjoys a lot of base should already know that a small driver isn't going to provide you with a lot of low end. Their punchy, nice for rock music...but they won't do much more.Another critique is obviously the price (Black Friday shaved off $80 so that was the nudge I needed to spring for them). At $400, there are a lot of alternative set ups that would provide a very satisfying experience (Klipsch, logitech, Corsair..if you can still find the SP2500's) at a much cheaper price point. But head to head, those speakers just can't match the clarity and power of the A5's. If money isn't an object of course, then you could spend 5 or $600 and in turn blow the A5's away....it all comes down to what price point vs quality are you comfortable with. At $320, that made them roughly $70 more than the Corsairs.....for me? Close enough to justify the sizable upgrade! Finally, for an extra $100 you can have the bluetooth versions of the A5's. That would have been a nice feature, but personally, I think that's too expensive. I picked up an Esinkin bluetooth adapter for $15 on an amazon lightning deal, and it does the job just fine. I could see $30 more, but $100 really isn't justifiable imo.Soooo long story short, if your in the market for some high end desktop speakers...you need to at least give these a listen, their outstanding and I just can't see someone ending up disappointed with their performance. 5Best "computer speakers" I've ever heard.Waited a few months before writing this to really let them come into their own. Not really sure how/why these bad-boys are classed as 'computer speakers' - they're more on par as actual fidelity-listening speakers. If you're looking for a (decent) set of speakers to squeeze in the usually cramped spaces on either side of your monitor, you'd be better served with Logitec or Klipsch's offerings for about 1/3 the price (I upgraded to these from the Klipsch 2.1s).If SQ is paramount, you're going to want to go with AE's recommended spacing of 6ft - yeah, I know...who's desk is that big, right? Like I said, these things don't want cramped spaces (IF you want to get the most out of them). I bit the bullet and got a pair of stands for them (also available on AE's site - can be had for a few dollars less elsewhere if you look around) - made all the difference in the world. If you listen to a lot of bass-heavy music, consider getting a stand-alone sub for that extra low-end extension - I find the bass to be lacking from them (for my tastes), but that's a matter of preference. AE also carries a sub to mate to them, but I went with one from JL Audio.Regardless of their classification, these are top-notch speakers - you'd be hard-pressed to find better for the price. Buy with confidence. 5and have a surprisingly nice low end for speakers this sizeIf you're looking for new speakers, buy these. I don't regret forking over the 400 bucks. They're articulate, musical, and have a surprisingly nice low end for speakers this size. They won't make your living room rattle, but there's definitely a clarity and oomph to bass lines that you wouldn't expect from relatively small speakers. The thing I can't quite put my finger on is how smooth these speakers sound. I wish I had a better way to describe it. There's just something pleasing about them no matter what is being played. Like bits of music that might otherwise sound harsh just come through like butter. Plus, the bamboo looks killer apart from the great sound! 5Bluetooth stopped working after three daysI was super excited to get these speakers. Was hoping to have a high quality speaker that would be super functional for years to come. But the bluetooth function stopped working after three days. I tried calling Audioengine, but they don't seem to have a tech support number. Then I looked at some of the other reviews and saw that numerous other people had situations where the speaker (not bluetooth) stopped working altogether within a week or within a year or two, so I suspect this is poor manufacturing. For $600 speaker (bamboo) you would think this would be a product that would last a while. I'm returning them. But still trying to figure out what the best computer speaker is. 1Full beautiful sound. Easy blue tooth. So I ve been using these for a couple weeks. Most important: they sound rich and full, even streaming from my cell s Pandora. I hooked them up to my TV and everything sounds full and clear. I do professional sound and projection for a living. I own pro Bose, EV, Mackie, Peavey, Shure gear. In my living room, Audio Engine made the Rock Hall of Fame Induction show ring true. These are in a different class than my old Logitec 2.1 System with the big sub and separate tweeters. It was always missing the rich integrated mids. These AEs hookup easily and look great. I m not sure why I was living with bad sound at home. 5Build quality is excellent as wellI bought this to replace an old speaker set that was dying. I have to say I have not heard a cleaner sound out of any speakers at this price point. Build quality is excellent as well. I do recommend getting the sub woofer. Not that the bass is bad, but some more depth and power would be nice.Edit: One of the speakers died. So minus one star. But, this is not a damning review. I emailed audioengine, received a prompt reply, and troubleshot the problem. Unable to fix the problem, I returned them to a center here in the US. and in less than two weeks my speakers were tested, found wanting and replaced with a new set. Now, while I know even the highest quality production can still make a bad egg, the measure of a manufacturer can be seen in how they respond to the problem. In this case all responses were fair, prompt and polite. Due to excellent product support and the great enjoyment I am getting from this product, I remain and Audioengine fan and am looking forward to buying the sub woofer for myself for Christmas 4Great sound for the price!great desktop speakers for the price. You're not going to get $1000 sound out of these $399 speakers, but for near field listening on your desk they are surprisingly good for the price. I had a subwoofer (Definitive Technology SuperCube) in my closet I wasn't using, so I paired it with these. I generally don't like subwoofers (that's why it was in the closet) but I have it just barely helping out with the bass and it sounds good. Even without a sub, these are well worth $399. They are a little big for a desk, but just measure before buying to make sure you know what you are ordering. I have them connected to a Dragonfly Red on my Mac Pro. Certainly many times better than the same priced Bose speakers they replaced! I would have paid 2x this much for better sound in the same size, but I checked a lot of reviews and I didn't see anything up to $800 that seemed much better. I'm happy with the sound.I bought the white. I was really unsure about that choice. But I like them in white actually. It's different. 4Now that I can hear, I can speak.I bought these in August 2015 as speakers for my first turntable (a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC). The Pro-Ject turntable is no joke especially if you're interested and persistent about keeping a solid hardware configuration and making worthwhile parts upgrades when you know where you need it (acrylic platter, record clamp, better cartridges and cables, etc). ] The difference I discovered recently, after spending maybe a little too much time fiddling with the eq of my hi res DAC player listening to vinyl rips, came after an upgrade to the Ortofon 2m Bronze cartridge on my turntable. And also pushing the volume a little harder. Before I grow more verbose, florid, and unfocused with each sentence, I'll just say that these speakers have become my go-to for listening to everything I have regardless of format. Far preferable to either of the great headphones and IEMs I own. I don't want throw "highs" and "lows" and "mids" jargon around to make my case for these speakers. If you're on the fence, grab a beer or a doob and come to my living room to demo the A5s. Or just make the purchase right now, dear reader. They will paint your room and you will know sooner or later that you made the right choice. 5
