Customer Reviews

Not 20amp. Doesn't retractI feel stupid for buying this after using it and rereading the reviews. Without spending too much time conceiving this review I'll lay it out as it is from my opinion.A reel has 1 main reason to be purchased--to be a retractable extension cord. This misses the mark on the retracting functionally. It requires help and takes multiple attempts to retract every time. The locking clicks are too close together as well. The only reason why people would consider this over cheaper ones is because it is 12awg. Missed that mark too because they put a 15 amp breaker in it. Why is there a 15amp breaker on it when it has 20 amp plugs and 12awg wire? I could see a 15amp breaker it if were a 50' cord for legit derating purposes but then 20 amp plugs on it still make no sense. The thicker cord is why it doesn't retract as well and the thicker cord is useless because of the 15amp breaker. So to conclude, I feel stupid for buying it. The only reason why I bought it (12gauge) is the main reason why it doesn't retract easily. This would be fine if it were truly 20 amps but it doesn't use the 12 gauge to the full potential so why not get a cheaper 14 gauge that has a more flexible cord that actually retracts nicely if this reel is only 15amps in the end.Skip it. Spend a couple more bucks and get a reel 20 amp real. Hehe2I had to ding this a couple stars....It did not come with a mounting hook that screws into the ceiling which was referenced in the instructions. I picked one up at the hardware store but it seems it should have been supplied so the task could be completed without the extra trip and time. The hardware bag in the package containing the wall mount and associated hardware must have banged around in the package and chipped the paint off in a number of places on the reel case. Should have been in a small cardboard box - not a sandwich bag.I examined the receptacle end that others have mentioned was a week point with contacts that separated and didn't provide a strong contact to the inserted plug. The grip and size of the plug looks hefty but the contacts inside don't appear to be protruding into the barrel enough to make good contact. Time will tell if this becomes a problem as others have mentioned it has.3Good value for the priceI hung this from my ceiling to provide access to the plug on my garage ceiling that the garage door opener is plugged into. I use it to plug in my table saw and other wood working tools not located next to the wall in my garage. I chose this particular unit because it is one of the few with wire that is rated at 15 amps for under $100. Mine has 4 breaker protected outlets even though the description said 3 and it has handled the load from my (up to) 15 amp table saw without issue. There is even a light on the outlet to let you know it has power. A feature I didn't notice in the description is that the 4 outlet box is rubber coated which cushions it if you drop it to the floor which makes it feel even more durable. Only complaints are that it sometimes takes several tries to get the locking mechanism to click in and when rewinding it sometimes binds if the cord piles up on one side of the reel but usually pulling a couple of feet out allows it to fully retract. I've had for just a few months but so far no regrets. It is certainly better than dragging a cord from one of the few wall outlets and seems pretty sturdy.4Retractable reelI have had a retractable reel in my garage for at least 20 years and it is something I use a lot. The old one I purchased at Sears 20 + years ago and it always worked great but after all those years it finally wore out. I found this one online at Amazon and it looked exactly like my old one and after it arrived to where I could examine them side by side I would bet that the same company made them both. The only difference is that this new one is black and has a 20 foot 12 gauge cord where the old one was red and had a 16 gauge cord. I didn't mind giving up 10 foot of cord for the larger gauge wiring. If this new one holds up as good as the old one it will probably be around longer than me!5Does the Job This product works as advertised. I mounted it to the ceiling in my garage (8' ceiling), this works well for me. I used the included mounting plate and made sure I attached it to a ceiling joist. Since I was using the same plug the garage door was plugged into I made sure I installed the mounting plate just behind the fully opened garage door.Pros: has a 15amp circuit breaker (important if you have a wood working tool and a vacuum plugged in and operating at the same time).Cons: If attached to the ceiling the 20' length is a consideration (I wish I had looked for a longer cord length - perhaps 30') 5In service for 2 months and still working wellI am happy with the quality, retracting strength, and power capacity. Of the 2 I purchased, one tested to have no ground connection. Faced with the return procedure, I opted to open the housing and attempt a repair myself. I found a spade terminal dangling next to it's mating connector. I had to squeeze it for a tighter connection. Only the ground uses a spade terminal. The power and common use dual point spring loaded brushes. While inside the housing, I had the chance to inspect the components and now I am confident that these units will last a while. I pondered opening up the good unit to tighten it's ground connection but decided not to. I have been using both units daily for 2 months now and both are still working well.4MehThis had probably the best reviews of all the 12 gauge cord reels but I don't really see why. (Unless the others are just super bad) The housing on this thing is identical to the cheapo $30 Bayco & HDX cord reel you can get at lowes or home depot which we have about a dozen of. They just put a shorter, thicker gauge cord on it with a higher quality plug. When hung from high ceilings, the cord tension is lackluster at best and doesn't retract without a little finesse.Like the cheapos, the cord stop is essentially useless and requires putting zip ties on to keep it from moving up/down the cord. It's not bad, but it's not good either. Won't be buying any more.3Fours years and counting, this has been a great reel.(Note: this review is for the single lighted outlet model.) Very nice cord-reel, and unlike the other 2 multi-tap reels in my shop, the extension plug keeps the connection secure. The indicator light in the plug is not necessary, but it is handy. The male plug end is plenty long (for my application) and spring retraction is strong.Update March 2020: I've had one of these for 4 years, another over 6 years and they still work like new. The plugs holds tight unlike other retractable reels I've had, usually that's the first thing to go. They still retract fine. I've answered several questions over the years about this product but one question has me stumped, it was why did they put a 20 amp rated plug on a reel rated at 15 amps. I can only guess, and that would be because it's more of a commercial grade receptacle. Previous reels I've had over the years, the female receptacle was crap right out of the box and I replaced them with something more substantial. My reel hangs over a large workbench so 90% of the time the cord is hanging (versus laying on the bench or floor) so it has to hold the plug. That's my guess, but I wonder if the complaints by customers about it not holding were for the 4 or 2 outlet models, as mine have the single lighted receptacle. Whatever the case, I'm still happy with my purchase and I would purchase again.5Well made, works great, don't buy less than 12 gauge!I hung this from the ceiling in my garage/shop yesterday, all I had to do was screw a hook into the ceiling, hang the reel up and plug it in. Okay, one more thing, there is no way to clamp the ball down (the one that keeps the cord from going in further than you want), so I fixed it in place with two zip ties, one above and one below. The clear plug with LED to indicate a charge is going through the cord is nice and useful, the plug that goes into the wall is very heavy duty. The cord is definitely 12 gauge and only 20 feet long so it's safe to use with 15 amp machines. Beware of similar reels with smaller gauge cord, especially the ones with 50 feet of cord, you really only want to use those with lights or maybe a small drill, etc., or you could very well burn up your motor.5Not that good.I've had this for about a year and have 2 major gripes about it:1. the locking mechanism isn't that reliable. I often have to pull the cable out a few times before I can get it to lock2. The socket (on the extension) is very loose and doesn't hold a plug in well. I have to resort to tied knots in the cord to help retain the connection, and it still pops out if slightly bumped.3Way better than expected! Way, way better!I am an automotive technician with thirty years of experience. Most shops provide these for techs to use as a "shop tool", and I've worked in a number of shops. This is the best quality drop cord I've ever used, hands down, and again I've used a few in my thirty years. It's heavy, it's durable, it has built in circuit protection. I originally ordered this for my home, instead I'm taking this one too the shop and ordering another for the house.5
