  • X1 UV (Ultra Violet) FILTER: The X1 UV features 4-layers of our state-of-the-art and uniformly applied MRC, which means less flaring and ghosting that youd normally see with uncoated protection filters. Our modern coating chambers are air tight, producing a uniform coating visible to the human eye when holding the filter at a right angle to a direct light source.
  • MRC4 CONSTRUCTION: Two layers of MRC are applied to each side of the optical disk, resulting in a total of 4 layers (MRC4). In addition to being structurally harder than the glass itself, our MRC coating process increases light transmission from 94.6% (without MRC) to 97.8%. Glass without MRC coatings is highly susceptible to a range of optical phenomenon such as flaring, ghosting (lower contrast as a result) and generally less saturation.
  • ELIMINATES VIGNETTING: The X1 features a 3.5mm ultra-slim double-threaded frame profile to eliminate vignetting on wide-angle full-frame setups. In our lab tests, 4.2mm was the frame width at which point 1-stop of light falloff (vignetting) became visible on images with 16mm wide-angle setups on full-frame cameras.
  • X1 UV 72mm FITMENT: The X1 UV has front-threads, which means its compatible with all your existing filters (for stacking) and lens caps. To ensure the lettering on the filter never wears off we laser engrave text into each aluminum frame rather than use paint-based lettering.
  • 25 YEARS SUPPORT: We laser engrave each X1 UV with a unique serial number. When you activate your 25 Year Ironclad Guarantee online we associate your X1 serial number to you, so any future discussions regarding your X1 UV are tracked, issues recorded, all of which goes directly into our design and prototyping pipeline.

Customer Reviews

A filter that's actually easy to get off. I've been a serious amateur photographer since the early 1970s. Over the years I've bought tons of filters, both special effects and protective. I've honestly never really thought much about the protective ones. You buy them, put them on the lens, and that's it.However, this filter has a feature that I've never seen before that is incredibly handy. At regular intervals around the circumference there are small tabs. These make it much easier to get the filter on and, more importantly, off. Once a filter is tightly on a lens, it can be extremely difficult to unscrew. Camera stores sell special wrenches, gripping cloths, and all sorts of other thing to help with that. This is a MUCH better solution. 5From the box to my camera, the whole package was a thing of beauty. -'Customer-in-mind' factor: Wow, we don't see much of this anymore! Customer care is alll over the place. And I love that this product is made right here in the US of A.-Look and feel of the product:Way more impressed than I thought I'd be for the $17 price tag. Everything from the box to the product had a quality feel to it...even the company card!-Product packaging and presentation:Outstanding. Soft rubber-like inner part of the box where the filter fit snugly; designed to be easily removed and reused (the box itself took some coaxing to get apart but nbd). The cleaning cloth was larger and thicker than I expected, a real nice (and needed!) addition. The The X1 UV Lens itself had a nice little "heft" to it. Right out of the box it seemed that whomever placed it in there gave it one last wipe-down before closing the lid..it was crystal clear. The well thought out raised "notches" they put around the ring made adding it to my camera lens as smooth a process as one could hope for. I felt absolutely no resistance or need to "re-thread" (let the other novices understand :) but here's an even better surprise for me: my lens cap stays on even better with this ring! Before, it tended to fall-away from its mounting with just a slight bump in the wrong area (as you can see I found a neat way to keep the cap & camera together forever ;)Just really impressed by this filter, this company, AND the Price! 5Evident care in manufacture and an unambiguous guaranteeHaving purchased a pair of Canon's Great Whites (an EF 100~400mm f/4.5~5.6L IS II and an EF 70~210 f/2.8L IS II), those lens's seemingly enormous 77mm front elements seemed to call for the best quality protection available. Breakthrough Photography's assertion that their 77mm UV MRC4 "Ultra-slim" filters are "Weather-sealed," combined with their willingness to undertake a 25 year commitment to support of these registered serial-numbered filters sealed the deal, so-to-speak. The filters appear to have been precisely manufactured and show no apparent flaws. Only time and use will test the claims. I have every hope that use of these filters will validate Breakthrough Photography's unambiguous claim of quality.5Great UV Filter Nice filter and build quality! Took pictures and image quality is not affected. Love that is is slim and allows for the lens cap to stay installed in place. Well worth the price, don't buy those 10 dollar models others offer. You spend good money for your glass, don't skimp on filters. This is a quality filter for a good price! 5High Quality ProductI needed a new UV filter for my new Canon 16-35 f/4 lens. I had heard good things on the FB Real Estate Photography page about Breakthrough Photography, a San Francisco based company specializing in filters, and so I placed my order with them. The filter arrived in a plastic case inside a nicely crafted cardboard box which also contained a black lens cloth, a card explaining how to activate the 25 year guarantee (!) and a separate card with the email address and telephone number of the company's founder, Graham Clark. The whole package gave an impression of high quality and pride in the product which in turn gave me, the customer, a sense of confidence. The filter itself is very thin which is important in a wide-angle lens in order to avoid vignetting. I am very pleased indeed with the purchase and would unhesitatingly recommend this company to others.5Fantastic ValueI'm still on the fence about using UV filters overall and will be conducting some testing with and without UV filters in general. That said. If you decide in favor of having a UV filter on any of your lenses...this is the one! Breakthrough certainly has some higher-end UV filters and based on what I've read, they are excellent and likely worth the money. In my opinion, however, the X1 series seems to be the best price/performance balance. The build quality is excellent. It's real glass and real metal! I did find it a little challenging to screw the filter onto my lens at first. That, however, is a result of how very thin and unobtrusive the filter is, not because of the threading.I did some very quick, low quality, jpg shots to give me a sense of any color issues. I used a simple daylight white balance setting on my camera and took a couple of images both with and without the filter. I could not detect and obvious color cast, nor any obvious image degradation.I will conduct some extensive testing with high quality 24Mpix RAW images under controlled lighting with custom properly set white balance and will update this review with that data when complete.5Outstanding Customer ServiceI recently ordered three different Breakthrough Photography UV filters. The first two arrived shrink wrapped, and the exterior box and interior filter case both had seals. The third filter I ordered from was not shrink wrapped, did not have a seal on the exterior box, and the interior case had a seal but it was popped open. Clearly Amazon sent me a returned item. I contacted Breakthrough Photography and they immediately sent me a replacement filter with a label so I can returned the used filter. The filter itself looks very well made and is considerably less expensive than a UV filter from B+W, so needless to say I am a pleased customer. Five stars for outstanding customer service by Breakthrough Photography.5High Quality Filter at a more than fair price. This is exactly what I wanted when I purchased my 72mm Ultra-slim X1, MRCA UC filter. It's for my new Nikon 10-20mm wide angle lens. The slim design eliminates vignetting at 10mm. The filter arrived in record time and was packaged beautifully. The high quality glass cleaning cloth was a pleasant surprise. Kudos to Breakthrough photography for making me a happy photographer. 5Disappointed with its flares controlThis UV filter came nicely packed. It is very slim and easy to screw on my lenses. Compared to my other UV filters, it is very easy to clean. It claims to be weather sealed, although I don't know what that means since I don't see a rubber seal on the filter as weather sealed lenses normally do. Like other reviewers, I noticed the reflection of a light source on this filter is almost white, with a tint of light blue/purple, unlike most of multi-coated filters, which have a green tint. With the filter on, I didn't notice it affects the sharpness and the color of the image. However, I am disappointed with its control of flares, and more specifically the ghost image when pointing the lens/filter directly to a light source. Of course, the best way of handling flares is without any filter. But some filters work better than others in this area. I compared this filter with Hoya Pro1 Digital MC UV(0), which sells in the same price range as this filter on Amazon and ranked as #1 by lenstip.com in its UV filter test ( [... ]). Please see my attached photos of a simple (no so scientific) comparison of these two filters. So there are better options in the same price range when you really care about the performance of UV filters.3At first I was less than pleased with this filter and was on the verge of ...At first I was less than pleased with this filter and was on the verge of sending it back. After removing it from the box, I noticed it was somewhat dirty and needed to be cleaned. I don't think it was used, but instead may have sat around in some less favorable conditions before it was sealed up in the plastic case. It was made worse by the fact that I ordered a B+W polarizer at the same time and it came out of its case in pristine condition with no cleaning required. While cleaning for the better part of 15 minutes I thought I had some aberrations in the glass that weren't surface contaminants. It likely wouldn't be enough to show in images based on their size, but it would surely be the nail in the coffin for purchasing another item from this company again. As luck would have it, what I thought were issues with the glass started to come off on what was going to be my last attempt at removing them. Everything looked good after all the time I wasn't expecting to put into a brand new filter.Shooting with this filter since then has been great. It cleans easily, screws on smoothly and doesn't create any noticeable distortion in pictures. Dust blows off quickly and water spotting comes off with minimal effort. On my Canon 17-55mm lens, the photos don't have any noticeable chromatic aberrations or purple fringing when shooting wide focal lengths beyond what the lens produces on its own. In all my with/without tests, I haven't found any where it's evident there's even a filter present which isn't something I can say for others I've had in the past. The field testing speaks for itself though and it's done well in several months of use. Even at 17mm which is the wide end of the lens I'm primarily using this on, the color fringing at the edges is no worse than the standalone lens without a filter. At the end of the day I'd purchase this filter again and recommend it to others, but the first impression could use a bit of work. This is my first product from Breakthrough Photography and I'll certainly look at their lineup for future purchases.PROS- Easy to clean- No noticeable distortion compared to a standalone lens without filters- Great price compared to more expensive competitors- Works with center pinch-type lens capsCONS- Aluminum threads may not be as robust as brass if you plan to take it on and off frequently. This is more for awareness than anything though and is a trade off for the price point.- Arrived dirty5Very good quality filter from a U.S. company. What's not to like??I've had a lot of different kinds of filters (UV, Polarizers, ND) in various sizes for various lenses. When I came across this one, I decided that, though a bit pricey, I wanted to give this U.S. company a try. I'm happy I did. This filter seems very well made frame wise, the filter itself is crystal clear and cleans easily and the fit it perfect (and the packaging is the nicest I've seen on a filter). I live in the high desert area of New Mexico and, though I don't think you always need a filter on for protection, I do it here. When shooting outside, without notice, you can find yourself hiking through some pretty good wind with sand and dust. So I do it for protection mainly but, with this filter, I really don't think there is any negative effect on image quality.I'll use this one with confidence and, when I need anymore for future lenses or applications, I look at what Breakthrough has first.5Very satisfied with this UV Filter Very satisfied with this UV Filter. I got the 77mm and the 82mm. Not only is it well made but, it will protect you lens very well! My favorite part is the grip on the side of the filter, easy to grab for twisting on and off 5Good product and good design. Would buy again. Seems to be of good quality. I particularly like the notches on the frames edge They make the filter easy to install and remove. More filter manufacturers should have the same innovative design. 5Not reflective of the quality of this company's better productsI'm not sure how to write this review. I got hooked on Breakthrough Photography's filters when I purchased their x4 Polarizer that was introduced on Kickstarter about two years ago. The fit and finish were excellent and the resulting images were stunning (when a polarizing filter is employed properly). When I decided at the beginning of 2018 that it was time to purchase UV filters for my lenses, I didn't hesitate to order a bunch of Breakthrough's x1 models in a few different sizes. All of them were well-assembled, but the glass appeared to have a cloudy appearance. I figured that perhaps they were stored in their cases too long and the plastic had leached a film on the glass, but no amount or method of cleaning removed the haze. I had to assume that it was part of the original glass manufacture. I contacted the company to replace some of these filters and they responded professionally with replacements that were generally no better than the original order. I didn't want to not like these filters, but the degradation of images was too great to ignore. I shoot with mostly Nikkor lenses that have been carefully tested for color fidelity and sharpness. Just for grins, I ordered their UV x4 level filter. The difference was like night and day, but so was the price (about 5 times as much). At that price level, there are several alternative companies from which to choose. The x4 model is made of Schott glass, so no matter which manufacturer you choose, the mount design may change but the glass won't. At that point, why not shop for price? I hope I'm being fair to the company by writing the review this way. I support US companies and I'm glad to see so many positive reviews for this brand. However, my observations are truthful. Decide for yourself, I suppose.2Way better than Tiffen and made in America! These filters are beautiful! The packaging rivals something you'd see from Apple, very well done. I bought the X1 UV filters for 72 and 67mm. The filters do what they're supposed to do, protect the lens without causing any color shift. I like the ridged edges as well, very easy to take off.BTW, I ordered some Tiffen filters for some cheaper lenses I have at the same time I ordered the Breakthrough filters. One of the Tiffen cases was completely empty! This is the second time I've had something happen with Tiffen filters, the first time the filter was dirty and damaged even though it was supposed to be new. You don't have to worry about this with Breakthrough because everything is sealed very well.Lastly, this product is made in America. As an American, I'm happy to support one of the few companies that actually produces products here. Yes, I know Tiffen does as well, but the quality difference I get with Breakthrough is well worth it! 5Easiest brand to keep cleanIn my opinion, there are many brands out there which ensure very minimal impact upon your image. To me, this brand performs every bit as good as any of the higher level ones, but where it really stands out is in how easy it is it is to clean. In my experiences, I've very rarely have anything stick to it which I cannot quickly remove with a brush. Just the minimization of time spent cleaning it, really makes this brand stand out to me. I could not recommend it higher!5despite the fancy marketing, it's a cheap filterI was really excited about this product when I ordered it. "Made in USA" with a 25-year warranty. It arrived in a nice box similar to Apple iPhone. Unfortunately the performance is disappointing. Whenever I buy this type of filter I do a simple test, shooting against a strong light source and looking for flares/reflections. I ended up having to buy another filter from a brand I was already familiar with (B+W XS-Pro). The B+W XS-Pro costs 2x as much but performs 10x better. I attached 3 photos to this review... Left: taken with this product (X1), Right: taken with B+W XS-Pro, Middle: Taken with no filter. .review-image-thumbnail { background-position: center center; background-repeat: no-repeat; overflow: hidden; background-size: cover; height: 160px; width: 235px; } .review-media-gallery-content { height:100%; width:100%; background-color:black; } .reviews-mobile-media-gallery .a-carousel-viewport { margin-left:15px; } .cr-thumbnail-image { float: left; }1Protection and Function Initially, I bought this filter as protection for my lens, but once I started taking photos with it, the quality of my pictures were not degraded. For the price, I didnt expect for it to perform as well as it did. They even have a 25 year warranty that I just registered for and now have the piece of mind knowing if it breaks down the line, they'll be willing to replace. 5Highly Recommended for a UV Filter at its Price Point Thank goodness for the excellent packaging nanotec utilizes for this filter; flimsy plastic shipping envelope it was sent in had serious signs of abuse. Thankfully, the filter was just fine. The glass, made in Japan btw, is crystal clear. My wife initially thought we received only the aluminum 72mm ring. Very nicely machined and threads onto the Canon 18-200mm IS lens I purchased it for with ease and 5
